We met the heroine, Vivi Angelino, two books ago (and loved every bit of her as a secondary character), but in her own book, we find out there's much more to her than meets the eyes. When she offers herself to be a body double to Oscar winner actress she looks remarkably alike, after the winners for the two previous years were murdered, Vivi finds herself neck deep into an investigation that goes far beyond the glitter and glamour of Hollywood, and crosses a the boundary of very personal to herself, and she'll risk her own life to stop the bad guys and make sure justice is met. In this book, it felt to me that every page we uncovered layers of Vivi, things we might never have imagined from her tough girl, kick ass attitude, but, to me, the more I saw of her, the more I loved and admired her character.
Then, there's hero, goody-two-shoes FBI Agent Colton Lang, whom we find to have deep reasons for his rule follower façade. He's against the idea of Vivi taking the case from the start (but, of course, as typical Vivi, she goes against him anyway), but he knows when she wants something, nothing can keep her from it, and realizes trying to stop her is useless, so, when the case ends up in his jurisdiction, he works closely with her to catch the bad guys and make sure Vivi doesn't let her passion get the better of her judgment. The tension between them grows, burns and explodes (literally, a few times! :P) , and Lang finds himself in the position of having to overcome his past if he wants a happy future. Is the spunky, sassy, mouthy skater girl, who turns out to be the perfect girl for him, enough to make him break his own rules and allow himself a shot of happiness?
We can't forget the incredible set of secondary characters, which complete the book giving it even more life and laughs. I think Roxanne St. Claire did an amazing job showing the bonds of family and partnership in the Guardian Angelino series. It's impossible not to love Chessie, Uncle Nino, Zach, and OhMyGosh GABE! They're the perfect addiction to an already strong, fun story. They give the exact right balance to make it perfect. To me, the Rossi/Angelino crew is so real, they're so true, fun, funny, supportive, they're like friends. Calling them characters just doesn't feel right.
I've been a fan of Roxanne St. Claire's book since her Bullet Catchers. I've followed her work, loved her characters for a long time. To me, she outdid herself with this book, giving it depth and heart and light like never before. It's, hands down, my favorite book by her and so, so worth the read. I recommend it to everyone. An amazing, amazing book!
Colton Lang is sublime. Buttoned down to within an inch of his life, ordered and rule driven, we have been getting glimpses of him from the beginning of the series. In Face of Danger, he just explodes out of the gate, grabbing the reader's attention. There is never a doubt about his agenda and his motivation for his need for rules and control is spelled out early on. Vivi sets his world on edge, flaunting his love for order with her risk taking. But he is drawn to her. As he becomes more and more attracted to Vivi, we feel his anguish and his fear of taking the risk of falling for her.
Vivi Angelino...what a heroine. I have loved her since Edge of Sight. Confident in her skills, striving to bring her firm to the top of the heap of private investigation/protection agencies, Vivi wants to be the best, and throws herself whole heartedly into the growing of her familiy's business. Vivi has a past, though. Her traumatic experience changed her from a cheerleader/ballet dancer adolescent just coming into the exploration of her sexuality to a pierced tomboy who dressed in baggy clothes, doing her best to hide her feminine side. Learning about her trauma was heartbreaking. Watching her overcome her past, with Colt's help, was liberating.
Vivi and Colt together...put on a flame retardant suit to read the love scenes! Consider yourself warned... Jaysus....from the airplane to the bathroom to the wall...I kept expecting the pages to go up in flames! Beyond the omg! sex, these two had a connection and an attraction to each other that read as very real and believable. Instead of Colt giving up his rules or Vivi giving up her need to be herself, they learned to work with each other. Their coming together was not without issues. Both have trust issues, and Colt is scared to take a chance on love. He is totally on board for "no strings" sex, but love? That's a little more than he thinks he can do. Vivi wants the whole package. The sexual tension and the longing these two had for each other was palpable.
This book has lots of twists and turns in the suspense department, some of which I figured out fairly early on, some I didn't see coming until the details were revealed. There is a lot of action throughout, all tightly written to keep the pages turning. Ms. St Claire is a master of this genre, and this is definately one of her best all time efforts.
There is an appearance by Johnny Cristano, of Bullet Catchers fame, at the end. All of the usual suspects are here, and we get a good deal of time with Gabe(please let his book be next!) I am head over heels for this series, can't wait for the next one!
