Overall, I liked the approach of the book, it starts off hard and fast; Mike writes in a disgustingly arrogant manner on what types of behaviours he views to be masculine and feminine, and chastizes men who complain instead of do, who feel entitled to get what they want instead of working for it. Reading it made me feel a bit inadequate, in a good way. Its as though something in me sensed this was the type of un-apologetic, brash advice and criticism I needed to know what i need to work on in order to feel more confident as a man.
After the blazing intro, he starts tackling subjects like money, fitness, relationships and of course Mike's specialty: Mindset. You're going to get something out of this book.
The tone of the book changes considerably based on the topic Mike is writing about. The profound depth and beauty of the subject matter written in the final section titled "Motivation and Inspiration" is difficult for me to describe. It's sort of startling when you compare the content of the first segment which come off as sort of "Intelligent and Intense Frat Boy" to "Conscientious Motivator and Philosopher." To illustrate, there's an article where Mike details a grisly personal struggle he had to overcome, listing his doubts and insecurities before resolving to push past them and conquering the ordeal. The article moved me to tears. It's a powerful gesture when a strong person reveals their shortcomings and weaknesses; they in turn help you realize that they're not much different than you. It's motivating.
It's a powerful book. Grab it.
Also, some of Mike's most controversial writings didn't make it into the book. Where's "When in Doubt, Whip it Out"? Where's "How to Avoid a False Rape Case"? Instead, Mike includes like four essays about going to other motivational speakers' paid conferences. Are these guys just all copying off each other?
I was hoping for a curated selection of Mike's older writing, and maybe to see a little retrospect on an era of his life gone by. Oh well.
Mike's focus on self-improvement through controlling one's state with his broad views mixing Eastern with Western logic has found a worthwhile balance to pursue in life while encouraging men to do. Don't just read the material. Read it, process it, then put it into action.
Mike covers much on self conditioning, and developing personal strength. He speaks of ways to overcome society's madness and gives detailed accounts of that madness. Tells many of the flaws people have, and the excuses both genders use to deny, deflect, and dismiss their own weaknesses.
For those who are ready, this book is gift. For those nearly ready, this book is wake up call. For those who are lost, this book can be a much needed kick in the butt. For those who don't want to hear it, this book is a slap in the face. For those who are hostile towards Mike, he doesn't care.
