Justin, the Duke of Dinnisfree has turned off his emotions and refuses to engage in society unless it is in the service of the king. A King he is finding it harder and harder to like, let alone respect. He has had no role models in his life for love and compassion, but is always rescuing and providing for those that are abused and taken advantage of. He is not one to suffer fools lightly.
Arabella Carthright is a seamstress trying desperately to provide for herself and her parents, yet they are flirting with destitution and lead her to believe she is out of options. She has come to know she can only depend on herself, others find ways to disappoint and/or fail her. She is strong and smart and finds it difficult to trust anyone. Like Justin she has a nurturing side that wants and needs to take care of and even fix others in need.
Unwittingly Arabella is drawn into intrigue involving the king and queen, their possible divorce and potential scandal Prinny always seems to find. As Arabella is manipulated she meets Justin expecting one thing and finding protection unlike what she had planned. While Justine tries to protect Arabella his instincts say she is innocent, but his spy side is screaming CAUTION! They are a very good team, they just have to get out of their own way and embrace trust.
Ms. Johnstone has created characters that I instantly identified with and wanting them to succeed. The pace of the conversations and the back story kept me turning pages and I was sad to see the story end. Her villains were intricate and well thought out leaving a sour taste after each encounter and cheering when they get their comeuppance. The secondary characters brought humor and lightness to Justin’s character that was refreshing and left you knowing that he DID have people that cared in his life, he just needed to accept that level of interaction. The twists and turns Ms Johnstone wove into Justin and Arabella’s HEA brought surprises and aha moments to the story. This is book 5 in the Whisper of Scandal series, but can be read alone, however, you will find yourself wanting to go back and catch up with the scandals.
Arabella Carthright is a seamstress she gets caught up in the missing box with a emerald necklace and letters, when she delivers gowns she has made for the Kings mistress. At first I didn't like Arabella at all. I thought her to naïve. She really was gullible for a 21 year old women. The character would have been served better if written as an 18 year old. Arabella's adoptive mother is in Stanhope Home for the mentally impaired. Which turns out to be a horrible place that abuses it female patience and gets them hooked on drugs. She also, takes care of her adoptive father who has had a stroke. She is the caretaker and financial provider for her adoptive parents. So I began to like her for that. Arabella and Justine meet and he becomes very protective of her. Justine doesn't know of Arabella's involvement of the missing box with the letters and the necklace. He sets everything to rights in Arabella's life, which was a bit odd for a Duke. He had a troubled childhood himself, unloved and abandon by his mother and a stern coldhearted father.
Queen Caroline is rumored to have had a child with her lover. So the plot thickens. The story is full of twist and turns and has its share of surprises interwoven in the storyline. Its has a steady pace not slow and not fast. Well written characters and plot line. I really enjoyed The Dangerous Duke of Dinnisfree!!
Fast paced, adventure filled with engaging and mesmerizing characters. The storyline is passionate, compelling, and intriguing. It has secrets, passion, a bit of mystery, add in some suspense, romance and what a story!
Once again, Ms. Johnstone has written a story that is spellbinding, intriguing and simply mesmerizing! Fans of Historical Romance will be astounded, and thrilled as they turn from page to page. I personally, never tire of Ms. Johnstone's electrifying tales of Victorian Romance. She brings the story to life through the pages of a book! A must read! Highly recommended for fans of Historical Romance, Suspense and mystery. Another awe-inspiring tale!
