As a fan of Jacquelyn Frank's other books, it was easy for me to pick this book up and dive right in. The writing style is rich and easy to fall in love with. I didn't have any idea what the book was about, but trusted that it would involve some sort of paranormal and some romance.
The story takes place in a world where a typical evil scientist created a breed of Morphates while trying to play god. These Morphates are nearly indestructible, don't age, drink blood, and are super sexy (hey, I'm not complaining). They were separated from society and placed in their own cities, ruled by Alphas in a wolf-esque government structure. The main characters, Devon and Liam, are thrown together when Liam's group of protection detail is hired by Devon to protect her from increasingly violent Morphate attacks.
I'm usually adhere to a strict "no futuristic books" rule, but this book convinced me that I might need to have an open mind about the genre. I read the book almost in one sitting, drawn into the romantic (and super steamy) story that develops between Liam and Devon. The sizzle level was off the charts for the last half of the book! I'm also not your typical military/navy/etc storyline reader, but this author now completely has my trust in all things paranormal. The world that was created in this book has me hoping for more installments!
This book had potential, it really did. The world that JAX was building was unique enough that I wanted to know more about it. What kind of creature is a Morphate? By the sound of it one would deduce it’s some kind of shifter but they drink blood so…vampire? Some sort of weird hybrid maybe? That sounds pretty nifty, tell me more!

Here’s a summation of my reading notes:
• WTF is going on, what is this training exercise for?
• Ooh, male lead seems to have his head on his shoulders
• NVM, no he doesn’t, he just met the female lead
• Detailed description of the female lead
• Um…why did she just touch his crotch?
• Detailed description of male lead
• Mysterious allusions as to what the female lead is
• 9 page infodump
• Detailed description of male lead
• Detailed description of female lead
• Dinner date
I don’t mind slow builds a lot of the time but FFS can’t something actually happen? Too many repetitive descriptions and my mind begins to go to strange places.
Besides the fact that nothing happened my eyes snagged on a few pieces of…huh? Here are a few examples.
“Here’s how I see this, Spencer,” he said negligently.
“She had a mobile mouth…”
*pictures a cackling mouth running away on a pair of legs*
And then we have the usual tropes. The male lead is over 6’4”, muscle bound and stone cold…until he meets our female lead of course. The female lead is gorgeous, sensual, and somehow doesn’t realize that wearing see-through clothes is provocative. They are the exception to each other’s rules, drawn to each other but can’t be together because of 'reasons' and then go on to obsess over each other in excruciatingly long inner monologues.
So, I can’t. If something had actually happened, if the story hadn’t dragged, the information I was given wasn’t repetitive or if there had been fewer tropes, I think I could have liked this one. If you haven’t read one too many PRs or are in the mood for a slow build filled with nothing but sexual tension you’ll probably be fine reading this. Sadly, it just couldn’t hold my interest.
What happened before:
· Takes place in future where six cities have been walked off to try and control gang violence
· Dr. Paulson had hundreds of adults and children kidnapped for experiments
· 90% of humans experimented on died before becoming morphate
· Six different types of morphates were made but all (so far) have fangs, claws and drink blood, especially during sex or a fight
· Two morphates escaped and helped free the others and negotiated to take over the "dark cities"
Taking place about 50 years after the Phoenix Project, Devon (Devona in prequel) has finally made a weapon that can kill morphates and be used safely. Needless to say, some people are not happy and have put a price on her head. Devon hires Liam and his company to protect her and her inventions and things heat up.
WARNING: morphates are extremely sexual. I think this has more pages devoted to sexual interaction than Frank's usual books and those are already really hot.
