Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal

Intelligence gathering has never been the exclusive business of the Israeli intelligence community. In fact, running arms, stealing nuclear material from the United States, assisting African leaders the likes of Idi Amin, training Medellin hit squads, and testing atomic weapons for South Africa appear to be common "services rendered" by Mossad & Company. For strategic purposes, David Ben-Gurion tied Israel's intelligence operations to CIA shirttails, which has led both countries into unbelievable circumstances. The primary lubricant to the widespread involvement of Israeli agents in everybody's business, according to the authors, is the arms business, which brings billions of dollars annually to the country and those who control the intelligence operations. This is a pragmatic look at what Israel (and its partner, the United States) have been up to since the 1950s--as opposed to how they do what they do so well (see Ian Black and Benny Morris's Israel's Secret Wars , LJ 6/1/91). Strongly recommended for most libraries with collections in this area. Previewed in Prepub Alert, LJ 3/15/91.--Ed.

From Kirkus Reviews

A critical, impressively researched history of US-Israeli relations by Andrew (The Threat: Inside the Soviet Military Machine, 1983) and Leslie (Out of Control, 1987, not reviewed) Cockburn. Coming in the wake of the Gulf War, the Intifada, the Pollard espionage debacle, and the Bush Administration's somewhat revisionist attitude toward Israel, the authors' study is more than timely. Beginning with a brief, unsentimental version of Israeli history that has little in common with the establishment line, the two outline the forces, attitudes, and personalities that shaped the creation of that country and its formidable intelligence service, Mossad. From this grows the carefully crafted thesis that Mossad's most significant achievement has been the development of an enduring entente with the US via intelligence rather than conventional channels, the whole conceived by the legendary Reuven Shiloah and accepted by David Ben-Gurion. The authors also contend that rather than avoid the use of diaspora Jews in the gathering of intelligence, Mossad has heavily and successfully relied on them, as in the case of the Pollards. The direct connection between the Lehi terrorist group, the assassination of Count Bernadotte (instrumental in getting Jews out of Europe in WW II), and Shamir is explicated in detail, along with an Israeli entrepreneur's involvement in supplying Chinese ballistic missiles to Saudi Arabia. Current Israeli cat's-paw activities on behalf of the CIA and involvement in US domestic affairs, including presidential elections, are also revealed, with somewhat less perspective. This is no thrown-together post-Gulf product, but an unflinching, fact-packed, closely reasoned exploration of our relations with our strongest ally in the Middle East. -- Copyright ©1991, Kirkus Associates, LP. Top reviews from the United States

Without question, "Dangerous Liason" is the most comprehensive book summarizing U. S. - Israeli relations from 1948 - 1990. In fact, it is THE book many other authors refer to when writing about future CIA - Mossad operations. I initially picked up on Andrew and Leslie Cockburn while reading books authored by Texe Marrs, Michael Collins Piper and Victor Thorne a year or so ago. Subsequently, I found a YouTube video of this team being interviewed by Brian Lamb on CSPAN in the early 1990's that was absolutely fascinating. I have just finished the Cockburn's book and suggest it is a "must read" for anyone really interested in knowing our true relationship with Israel.

This is an astonishing book and its impact is no less for the time elapsed since its first publication. Never less than engaging and full of detailed information. If you want to understand why America makes no real attempt to control Israeli actions - then read this excellent book.

4.0 out of 5 stars Disturbing disconnect
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on December 4, 2017
Well written and researched. The writers present a complex under radar world of geo political and profiteering expedience.
The men (and one woman) who the Cockburn's familiarize the reader with have a disturbing disconnect between their actions and the countries and lives that are torn apart as a result. The writers too have a professionally dispassionate style which leaves the reader watching from the front. Just be aware then, that you can turn a corner on a trail in Columbia, look down on the scene by a river bank, and it might not leave you.

5.0 out of 5 stars Israel Unmasked
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on April 13, 2009
Andrew and Leslie Cockburns 1991 book on Israels relations with the C.I.A is still a valuable book with regard to the reality of the Israeli States involvement in the world at large.

It details a diverse range of issues from the arms deals to Iran which continued seamlessly from the Shah to the Ayatolah, Israeli involvement with the right wing dictatorships of Central America, its collaboration with apartheid era South Africa on weapons programmes (nuclear and conventional), its kidnapping and murder operations overseas aswell as spying and industrial espionage in the United States.

Even for the most hardened cynic of Israeli actions (based on a study of reality not prejudice) will be astonished at the sheer opportunism and sickening character of Israeli actions including arms sales and training to Columbian drug cartels. The nature of the Israeli Arms industry is curtly summed up in the statement of an industry executive bemoaning the "threat of peace" and the end of the murderous wars of Central America.

Other issues involve the Israelis contempt for the sovereignty of other nations - witness the ham fisted murder of a Norwegian waiter of Morrocan origins in front of his pregnant girlfriend and the abduction of the courageous Israeli whistle blower Vanunu from Italy.

There is no limit to the opportunism of the Israeli establishment, "Is it good for Israelis?" seems to be the only measure - morals, ethics are just not in the picture. Even their closest allies in the U.S. are treated with contempt from time to time for instance the Israelis had intelligence relating to the truck bombing of U.S. personnel in Lebanon in 1983 but didnt pass it on.

One looks forward to the day the Israelis are put in their place, ie. within the 1967 borders; perhaps then reparations can be made (and paid) to the victims of their vicious and violent actions.

This book should be essential to anyone interested in the real facts about Israels foreign and covert policies, it is well sourced and includes interesting interviews with many of the figures involved, though perhaps not the best read if you are not familiar with modern Middle Eastern history and Israeli relations with the U.S.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not quite as described.

The book is not a hardback as described, but comes instead in stiff covers. Not critical, but still a little disappointing.
