Pierre Choderlos de Laclos produced "Les Liaisons Dangereuses" in an effort to "write a work which departed from the ordinary, which made a noise, and which would remain on this earth after his death." He did just that. First published in 1782 in four volumes, "Les Liaisons Dangereuses" was an immediate success, and has since inspired a large number of literary commentaries, plays, and films. The novel is an epistolary piece, written as letters between members of the French noble class. An egotistical battle for control ensues between the Marquise de Merteuil and the Vicomte de Valmont, with the promise of sexual gratification to the victor. The primary victims are Cecile, a naïve but pretty young girl, her admirer, the Chavelier Danceny, and Madame de Tourvel, a virtuous (and married) young woman. Dangerous Liaisons is an epistolary novel which chronicles the rivalry between two former lovers who view sex as a game and means of manipulation. It is set in aristocratic France and must be read with this context in mind so the reader can fully appreciate why it was considered an amoral and scandalous book when it was first published.

The book's epistolary format is enjoyable because the reader is privy to the characters' deepest thoughts and secrets. This is particularly true of the villains Marquise de Merteuil and Vicomte de Valmont who are so unashamedly licentious that the reader cant help but be amused by their antics.

I could not help feeling that towards the end of the book the author felt compelled to conform to what would have been deemed, in those days, a fitting ending for his villains. I also felt that some parts of the book were repetitive and because of this the story dragged. However, I do think that even in our modern era the book does offer some still relevant observations about the nature of relationships between the sexes.

BEWARE! Switching to the kindle book leaves you with the incorrect (VERY different) translation. Kind of a bummer as I need to overnight the correct version for class... the two books are different and should not be linked.

The book is a collection of letters that are sometimes tedious to read through, but the intrigue keeps you engaged enough to continue. These are the letters the movie Dangerous Liaisons was based on, and the play Les Liaisons Dangereuses. It is an interesting look at French society before the revolution, so, worth reading for that purpose, if no other.

With a plot as lascivious as any modern-day story, Dangerous Liaisons is translated from two-centuries-old French and the story is told entirely in letters. But those who stick with reading it soon find that while some subjects change with time, others have remained the same for centuries. You will alternately enjoy and agonize over the plot as it descends toward its inevitable outcome. Guys: this book practically serves as a handbook for seduction - as well as a cautionary tale.

Not very nice games.
One naughty wager.
Ruined reputations. Ravished maidens.

In short, all the good stuff.
This books has inspired several delicious films.
One of the best is, "Dangerous Liaisons," starring Glenn Close and John Malkovich.
R-rated and daring for its time.
PG for this day and age.
