I adored Becca Fitzpatrick's foray into the thriller world with Black Ice last year and was all sorts of excited for Dangerous Lies! Though I wouldn't say it was as thrilling as her first one, it was still a pretty decent read with a few heart-pounding moments!

Estella has witnessed a crime, a brutal murder involving a dangerous criminal and now she has to testify for his persecution. In the meantime, she's being sent into WITSEC and already her life is falling apart. Leaving her home, everyone she knows, including her boyfriend doesn't make her happy. She has three weeks until she's eighteen, then she plans to leave Thunder Basin, Nebraska and go live with her boyfriend, Reed, who's also in WITSEC and live the life she wants to live.

Stella, as she's called in her new life, wasn't the easiest character to like. I can understand her being scared and even a little angry about her situation. She comes from a rough life with a mother who is addicted to drugs and what basically led to the whole ordeal with a guy being murdered in their home. But the way she behaved for a good half of the novel was deplorable. Carmina is a retired cop who takes Stella in as her "caretaker" during her WITSEC stay, but Stella was anything but polite or kind. She resents everything Carmina makes her do. Such as waking early for breakfast to finding a job in town. She's an ungrateful brat and I couldn't really stand her.

Add to that, she bemoans missing her boyfriend constantly, and yet, that doesn't stop herself from flirting with a nearby neighbor boy, Chet. She goes along with the harmless flirting, even knowing she will never let it go too far. And all the while, she waits to receive an email from Reed, her boyfriend, from their secret account.

I must confess that I’m one of maybe seven bloggers in the world who haven’t read the famous Hush Hush series, and I think it’s safe to say that for me, Becca Fitzpatrick’s switch to the YA mystery/thriller genre certainly paid off. I am a huge fan of thrillers, be it adult or YA, and this is an author who knows how to write true page-turners and give us so much to think about along the way. I considered Black Ice to be a huge success with its morally ambiguous characters, heart-stopping danger and a romance that maybe wasn’t for everyone’s taste, but that definitely worked for me. Dangerous Lies might be better suited for a larger audience, but the things I loved about Black Ice, the bones of the story, are still very much present.

We meet Estella as she goes in the witness protection program. She is separated from her boyfriend and her self-destructive, addicted mother and forced to live in a small town with a hardened ex-cop. Stella feels betrayed by her mother and desperate for her exile to end as soon as possible.

It isn’t always easy to like Stella. In fact, she is purposely written as rebellious and self-centered, but even as we're trying to come up with various punishments for her behavior (from a purely parental standpoint, of course), we fully understand how she came to be that way and what went wrong along the way. She is a girl who practically raised herself under very difficult circumstances, a girl who has never been properly loved by anyone. I was afraid, for a time, that there would be no saving her, no easy way out, that she was just too hardened for a regular life.

As a character, Chet provides a nice counterbalance to Stella.

Becca Fitzpatrick can write, no doubt about it. She has skills. But I was disappointed in the edgy nature of this story, which makes it a book I cannot recommend to my own daughters. I was also disappointed in the focus on sensuality more than romance. The reasoning behind her heroine's decision to have sex felt irresponsible and is definitely not the kind of thinking I would want other teenagers to adopt as their own. For that reason, I gave this story, although well-written, only three stars.

Stella is new in Thunder Basin. She's there to live with Carmina, a retired cop. Stella's name isn't really Stella, she's in a witness protection program. She's a city girl who was forced to move to the country and now she's stuck there. The only good thing about her move is Chet, the boy next door who's welcoming and friendly. Stella needs to adjust and she has to do it quickly. She has to work while she never had a job, she has to follow the rules while at home she could do what she wanted and there's hardly any luxury. Those are things she can get used to, but will she ever stop looking over her shoulder and should she or is the danger still nearby?

Dangerous Lies is a gripping read about a girl who's had a hard life. Stella didn't have a safe and loving home and she's used to doing everything on her own. Thunder Basin is a big adjustment, but she's tough and she tries. I liked that about her. She has some big secrets and she isn't supposed to tell anyone about them. I kept wanting to know more and couldn't stop reading until I found out what they were. I love a good book about secrets and this is definitely a great one.

There's a lot of chemistry between Stella and Chet, but she isn't looking for someone new. She doesn't want to give up her past entirely, it's really hard for her to do that. I felt bad for her, but also wanted her to see sense. It's always a good sign when I feel something like that while reading a book. Everything was exactly as it should be and I enjoyed reading Dangerous Lies very much. I think Becca Fitzpatrick has written another fascinating, fast paced and thrilling story.
