About the Author

Charles Bukowski is one of America’s best-known contemporary writers of poetry and prose and, many would claim, its most influential and imitated poet. He was born in 1920 in Andernach, Germany, to an American soldier father and a German mother, and brought to the United States at the age of two. He was raised in Los Angeles and lived there for over fifty years. He died in San Pedro, California, on March 9, 1994, at the age of seventy-three, shortly after completing his last novel, Pulp.

Abel Debritto, a former Fulbright scholar and current Marie Curie fellow, works in the digital humanities. He is the author of Charles Bukowski, King of the Underground, and the editor of the Bukowski collections On Writing, On Cats, and On Love.

book writ just after, but before, Buk moved to San Pedro suburbia--has that uncertainty of not quite left the courtyard apartment and not quite settled in San Pedro. Poems assume a kind of block-shape on the page, like they, or he, are boxing up something...Some are strictly journalese (Bukowski went to City College LA as journalism student and, in a sense, did become a journalist--his books of poetry his journals) though large swaths of it, the work, rise above journalism.

The poems in this volume consistently present Bukowski as I've come to see him -- perceptive, self-deprecating, and frequently and unexpectedly funny as hell. There isn't really a bad or wasted line in here. This opinion is based on my knowledge of Bukowski derived from having read maybe 90 percent of his books. If you can have only one volume of Bukowski poetry, this should be it, in good part because it includes musings from his East Hollywood period and the affluent San Pedro days. In this regard, You may notice that Bukowski almost never mentions money or personal finances in his earlier work, but in San Pedro, mortgages, tax accountants, and the price of automobiles enter his view.

If you are a fan of the man's work, you really can't go wrong here. Booze, old friends, old lovers, old regrets, and new troubles all live in the poems presented here. Just buy it already.

It’s always difficult to review a Charles Bukowski book, because they usually leave me feeling somewhat stunned. It’s like being assaulted by words and beat around the head until you get to the final page and realise it’s left you with a minor concussion. But that’s a good thing – Bukowski truly had a way with words, and in many ways he’s at his best here. Although equally, it’s hard to recommend any one of his poetry books above another.

That’s because each of Bukowski’s collections has a sort of soul of its own, and this one has an older soul to go with the age of the man who wrote it. That’s not to say that he avoids any of his traditional subjects, though – women, booze and horses are out in force here. But he does look at them with the advantage of age, and it’s interesting to see how that changes his opinion on things over time.

Overall though, this is just a rock solid poetry collection with some incredible chunks of wisdom on offer. You know what you’re getting with a Bukowski book – if you’ve read one before, that is – and this is a pretty typical example. Because of that, it’s not a bad collection to start with, especially because if anything, he’s a little tamer here. It reads like the collection of a man who’s finally coming to terms with his life, which in many ways, it is. That means it’s not always easy to read, but it is always sublime, and it’s entertaining along the way too. Give it a go!

A brutal honesty from Bukowski

This book once again displays Charles Bukowski's brutal honesty regarding his relationships with women, alcohol, gambling and indeed himself. The discourse of much of Bukowski's poetry could be considered sloppy or innovative depending on how highly you regard grammatical conventions. I really enjoyed this book and I think it is perfect for those who are perhaps stifled by the more conservative writers that are covered at school/college/university and so on. I would say that those who are easily offended or are sensitive should not purchase this book!

I recently read a poem in this book , which I had never read before amongst so many other's..... but this one particular poem of his , I found to be the most dangerous one he ever wrote, I wonder how he got away that one poem !
