Several characters from Ms. Burrowes other series factor into this story: Nicholas and David, each of whom have their own stories in the Lonely Lords series, play significant roles. The events of this story occur after their stories so they are accompanied by their wives. I really like this about Ms. Burrowes work. It's almost as if you're reading a family history rather than just a series of books.
Bottom line: The writing is good, the pacing moves along, I cared about the characters, I worried about the complications and was pleased at the resolution. It's pretty hard to ask for more.
Daniel is a vicar who not only has a new position, he also has an estranged wife (who had previously embezzled from him and blackmailed his sister) and his son (who is really his nephew) has moved to live with his sister (the child's actual mother). This all makes for a sad start to the story. Daniel is welcomed into the community. Most especially by Lady Kirsten, sister to the earl who holds the living. The Earl of Bellefonte, Nick, has shown up throughout many of Grace's books including one of his own. This giant of a man, has a heart to match his size, and has got to be one of the most loving man/brother, husband, father that I've read.
Daniel and Kirsten begin to have feelings for each other despite the issue of Daniel's estranged wife. Being the honorable man that he is he refuses to act on them. Though his wife is absent, she is scheming behind the scenes to bring down her husband.
This story takes it's time to unfold and is filled with a variety of relationships that Daniel makes with neighbors, the Haddenfield family and a group of young boys who are part of a school he has started.
If you haven't read Grace Burrowes, this will be a good start - it will make you want to go back and get the background on tall the characters. IF you are a fan of Grace's writing like I am you will thoroughly enjoy this latest story.
Daniel is the new vicar in Haddonfield. He has an estranged wife left behind and a 'son' who he misses very much. Lady Kristin Haddonfield is the sister of the current Earl, who has been jilted twice and has decided to be the spinster aunt to her many nieces and nephews.
They fall in love, but Daniel is still married. There are other issues, but I don't want to give too much away.
The book reminded me a little of Jo's Boys by Louisa May Alcott because one of the vicar's duties is to teach the neighborhood boys. Daniel is a sweet man and a wonderful teacher. Kristin who can be a little caustic actually loves children and enthusiastically jumps in to help with the 'rotten' boys. I loved this part of the story especially. Each boy is engaging, frogs, toads, and all.
Now I'm waiting anxiously for the next book in this series, but I heartily recommend Daniel's True Desire.
As a fan of Grace's Lonely Lords series, it was nice to see the reappearance of several familiar characters, and particularly to see a happy ending for Letty Banks' brother Daniel, after the many sacrifices he made to protect Letty and to cope with his awful wife, Olivia. There is even a brief appearance by the Duchess of Moreland, of the Windham family series. Highly recommend!
When he arrives in Haddonfield and meets Lady Kirsten Haddonfield, he realizes that he should have explained more about his situation to the Earl, her brother. Both Daniel and Lady Kirsten, have secrets and both also realize that they are probably perfect for each other.
One of the things I like about Grace Burrowes books is the continuing family format, I love to see her working her way through one family and tying up that storyline. This was equally well done as her other books have been.
