I have read an awful lot of Grace Burrowes books and each and every one of them has left me feeling good, DANIEL’S TRUE DESIRE, was something else entirely. I simply didn’t want to see it end! Daniel and Kirsten were absolutely the most special couple ever, and Daniel - there are no words for a hero like him! No, he didn’t have a title, he had very little money, nothing at all to recommend him for an Earl’s daughter like Kirsten, but oh, he had heart, he had honor, a sense of humor, and an abundance of love and understanding. Be still my heart!

The story starts off with Daniel, a vicar, bereft and on his way to Kent and his new assignment as the vicar of the family seat of earls of Bellefonte in Haddondale. His life has hit a new low. His wife had run off to God knew where, and the child he had raised for the last five years, had been reunited with Daniel’s sister Lottie. Missing young Danny, the child most thought was his son, was excruciating.

Resigned to spinsterhood, Lady Kirsten Haddonfield welcomed the new vicar and urged him to stay at her family’s home while the vicarage went under some much needed repairs. In a very short time, the handsome vicar had Kirsten rethinking her ideas about love and marriage, but secrets thought dead and buried, were about to overcome any happiness Daniel and Kirsten thought they had found.

What really made this story resonate so deeply in my heart? It wasn’t just the wonderful romance and love that evolved with Daniel and Kirsten, it had even more to do with their interactions with their ‘rotten boys’. As a vicar, it often fell upon them to tutor the young boys in Latin, maths, history and so on.

I truly am a big fan of Grace Burrowes and love her books but this one is really over and above. When she titled the series True Gentlemen she really means it with this one. The good news - this book is filled with wonderfully written characters who are all part of an extended family/ community found throughout all of Grace;s books. The Bad news - if you haven't read any of her multiples series you will still enjoy this book but you miss a big dimension to the chracters. They all have such a rich backstory to be found in previous books.

Daniel is a vicar who not only has a new position, he also has an estranged wife (who had previously embezzled from him and blackmailed his sister) and his son (who is really his nephew) has moved to live with his sister (the child's actual mother). This all makes for a sad start to the story. Daniel is welcomed into the community. Most especially by Lady Kirsten, sister to the earl who holds the living. The Earl of Bellefonte, Nick, has shown up throughout many of Grace's books including one of his own. This giant of a man, has a heart to match his size, and has got to be one of the most loving man/brother, husband, father that I've read.
Daniel and Kirsten begin to have feelings for each other despite the issue of Daniel's estranged wife. Being the honorable man that he is he refuses to act on them. Though his wife is absent, she is scheming behind the scenes to bring down her husband.
This story takes it's time to unfold and is filled with a variety of relationships that Daniel makes with neighbors, the Haddenfield family and a group of young boys who are part of a school he has started.
If you haven't read Grace Burrowes, this will be a good start - it will make you want to go back and get the background on tall the characters. IF you are a fan of Grace's writing like I am you will thoroughly enjoy this latest story.

Daniel is estranged from a witch of a wife; he's conflicted about his vocation, though he doesn't fully realize this for some time; now he has arrived at Haddondale to assume the mantle of local vicar. Lady Kirsten is smart, out-spoken, and has had two broken engagements.

Honestly, I can't think of much to say. While I'm not a fan of 'vicar' stories, this was written well enough to hold my attention to the end. Daniel is a lovely man, Kirsten is an admirable woman.

Much of the story consists of Daniel, with Kirsten's assistance, taking several local boys in hand and teaching them. (I wish I'd been so perfect with my own.) There is a little anxiety surrounding Daniel's nephew but Daniel solves that problem with perfect aplomb. Increasing angst relating to the nasty wife surfaces from time to time but Daniel will find the perfect solution for that too. Kirsten comes up with perfect ideas of her own. They were involved in one circumstance that was something less than perfect, but being perfect, Daniel explained it away to perfection.

In fact, they're just perfect. Not real to me.

This made such an impression on me that, by the time I began writing this review, I had to look up the heroine's name. I'd forgotten it.

Never saw the ending coming, but it made perfect sense when I got there. This author is a total one-click for me as she never disappoints. The more books she puts out, the better they get. Each can be read as a stand alone. The characters are consistent within themselves. No mustache twisting villains here, just real world motivations such as greed, self-absorption, selfishness and so forth, but strong enough to carry books.

Even the animals are fleshed out. The heroes don't jump on stallions and gallop off for more miles than any living horse could ever cover. Nope, they crawl onto mares or geldings big enough to hold their weight and the horses get tired, fractious, need resting and poop at inconvenient moments, just like their real-world counterparts. Plus the heroes get sore bottoms and frozen toes, yet still manage to be heroes. That's awesome writing!

Other reviewers gave great sketches of the book's plot. Buy this for the way you FEEL as you read it and the way you don't want it to end. This author is a genius in the way she evokes feelings and sucks you so deep into her world that you will miss appointments, cancel outings and stay up all night wrong just to finish this book (and her others) in one sitting.
