Dante’s Inferno is an epic single player, third-person action adventure game inspired by "Inferno", part one of Dante Alighieri’s classic Italian poem, "The Divine Comedy." Featuring nonstop action rendered at 60 frames-per-second, signature and upgradable weapons, attack combos and mana-fueled spells and the choice of punishing or absolving the souls of defeated enemies, it is a classic Medieval tale of the eternal conflict with sin and the resulting horrors of hell, adapted for a new generation and a new medium. .caption { font-family: Verdana, Helvetica neue, Arial, serif; font-size: 10px; font-weight: bold; font-style: italic; } ul.indent { list-style: inside disc; text-indent: -15px; } table.callout { font-family: verdana; font-size: 11px; line-height: 1. 3em; } td.vgoverview { height: 125px; background: #9DC4D8 url(https://images-na.ssl-images-amazon.com/images/G/01/electronics/detail-page/callout-bg.png) repeat-x; border-left: 1px solid #999999; border-right: 1px solid #999999; padding-left: 20px; padding-right: 20px; padding-bottom: 10px; width: 250px; font-family: verdana; font-size: 12px; }

Story
The Italian mercenary Dante returns home from the bloodletting that was the Third Crusade to two pieces of soul-crushing news. The first is that although he was assured that he was absolved of mortal sins committed in the form of wartime atrocities in the name of the churches interests in the Holy Land, that is not actually the case and his immortal soul is in grave peril. The second and more terrible is that his beloved Beatrice has been murdered, and her soul pulled down into hell by a dark force. Vowing not to accept the damnation of either souls, he gives chase, vows to get Beatrice back and descends into the infamous nine circles of hell. For weapons, he wields Death's soul-reaping scythe, and commands holy powers of the cross, given to him by Beatrice.

Go to hell with Dante's Inferno.
To vanquish the foes you encounter on your journey through the hell of
Dante's Inferno, you must learn to wield Death's Scythe with precision and deadly force. Mix light attacks with heavy attacks to create combos, then incorporate jumps and grabs to add another layer to your combat. With dodging and Holy Cross moves thrown into the mix, you can truly become a force to be reckoned with. Without using all of your combative skills and techniques, there is no hope of ever reaching Beatrice.

Holy Powers
During your journey, you may collect magic abilities for use against the legions of hell. When you perform the Righteous Path power you make a dash attack and leave a trail of icy shards in your wake. With Martyrdom you sacrifice health and mana to deal a heavy amount of damage to surrounding enemies. Divine Armor regenerates your health and protects you from damage. Add these and other powers to your arsenal to vanquish all who stand in your way and when you need to replenish your mana-fueled abilities, visit the Holy Fountains scattered throughout the gameplay area.

Creature Taming
As powerful as weapons and magic are, sometimes surviving the perils of hell requires brute force. With the power of Death's Scythe, you are able to mount the beasts of hell and use them against your enemies. All of this, however, requires ridding the beast of its current rider first. If successful, you will become the beast’s new master. Now use its awesome power to pulverize enemies and complete tasks that require a beast's strength.

Let me start off by saying I am a GOW fan. Like, diehard. So I'm pretty critical when I hear the term "GOW clone" because, a, I compare all hack-n-slash titles to the series and, b, I'm a diehard fan when I find a game I j'adore. That said, after seeing the truly E P I C trailers for Dante's Inferno, and knowing the story somewhat, and for the surprisingly decent price I decided what the hell (pun intended), I'll buy it and try it out. Boy, am I glad I did...

First off, Dante's Inferno does possess elements that are attributed to GOW. That's not saying it's a true knock-off because there are elements to this title that are truly its own thing, but that's not denying its similarities to the aforementioned acclaimed series either. Still, that being said, at least the developers decided to copy the formula that is THE definitive hack-n-slash formula because Dante's Inferno, even for a hardened GOW fan like myself, is still one helluva good time. I'd have to go so far as to say that Dante's Inferno pretty much almost equals the epic awesomeness of GOW if it weren't for the obvious knock-offs here and there.

Graphics-Literally, some of the best I've seen and I'd stake my name on them being equally as good as anything else out there. They're smooth, polished and extremely detailed. I love how the cartoon-esque traditionally animated cutscenes play into the story because they offer a completely immersing and unique backstory narrative. The occasional CGI movie cutscene also is truly beautiful (and the graphics from the game itself are so detailed it doesn't look too overly apparent the CGI movies are in fact CGI), and it's apparent the developers invested a lot of money into the game. I'd conclude graphics are as perfect as one can expect from this generation, rivaling -and at times surpassing- the equally amazing Uncharted 2.

Story-It's a story we all know, even if we don't think that we do. Dante's Inferno is rank with gore and blood. This is presented EVERYWHERE, and the game achieves its M rating for a reason. By far the most entertainingly, outrageously M game I've played... It's kind of surprising developers didn't jump on the story before this because it's one that was just made for video games (or TV). While it doesn't follow Dante's Inferno the book (naturally...) exactly, the developers really went the extra mile to create an immersing experience nonetheless, which -in my opinion- made Dante's Inferno the game better than the story we all know of from the book.

Gameplay-Ah yes, this is where Dante's Inferno slides alongside GOW and where the haters hate the most about. Third person fixed camera? Check. Gore? Check. One angry, extremely kick ass guy? Check. Sound like GOW? Ok, ok, the gameplay is extremely similar to GOW and I won't deny it, however, it's still enjoyable as ever. While some people would complain about how similar gameplay is, I don't get why they can't just enjoy the smooth controls and takedown sequences we've all come to know and love from GOW. They're practically the same, so what's there to hate? Just because Dante's Inferno developers partook most in this area doesn't mean the game isn't enjoyable. Good thing they stole from the best because the best is the best for a reason.

In the end, whether you're a fan or not of the title, don't let biased, erroneous judgement based solely on the fact Dante's Inferno plays almost exactly like GOW affect your judgement whether or not to pick up the game. The only part I felt could've been left out (to DLC territory) was the malebolge parts...honestly, 10 of those are just uncalled for). Overall, thought, Dante's Inferno is truly an epic experience with great gameplay (snatched right from the equally amazing GOW series), amazing graphics, great storytelling and epic cutscenes, and one all fans of hack-n-slash games can enjoy. Trust me, you'll have one helluva good time!

Oh, people are going to blast the game for the hilariously shocking trophy "Bad Nanny", but it's pretty damn awesome.

Ok, I'll admit that I overlooked Dante's Inferno for years. Everything I read indicated that it was a God of War clone, and a pretty bad God of War clone at that. Now that I'm getting a little closer to sunsetting my PS3 and moving on to the PS4, this was one of the games buried in my Amazon wish-list, so I figured I'd give it a shot. It turned out being one the best gaming decisions I've ever made.

Combat - After playing the very clunky Castlevania Lord of Shadows II, I needed a game that offered sweet combat, and boy I got it! It's very refreshing to embrace combat, as opposed to shying away from it. In my opinion, there's only one aspect of the combat that reminded me of God of War. While engaging in battle, you'll get the occasional prompt to press 'x' button here, or 'circle' button there. But besides that, Dante's Inferno holds it's own. I think my favorite thing about the combat is the distance attack, that uses Dante's holy cross. I don't know, it's something pretty neat about shooting a series of crosses at demons. And, many of the combos are seamless - that's always a plus in my book.

Weapons - Usually, if a game only offers two weapons, that's a problem. However, this approach kinda works for Dante's Inferno. I'm very satisfied using the scythe for face to face battle, and the holy cross to take care of enemies from a distance. As with several action games, there are magic attacks, but I'm reluctant to use them, as usual. For those who are wondering, the scythe feels nothing like Kratos' chaos blades, and the holy cross is like nothing Kratos has ever used.

Enemies - I was very surprised with the enemy variety, wow! I believe there were 9 circles of hell, and each circle introduced new enemy types. Many of the enemy types were independent from each other. For example, many games may have a standard demon as an enemy type. Later on, you might see said demon with 'wings', and that's treated as a new enemy. Thankfully, I didn't see too much of that while navigating the circles of hell. Many of the bad guys were difficult to fight, but it never felt frustrating for some reason. Let's chat about the boss battles for a quick second. If the game has a weakness, this is where it's at. Don't get me wrong, the battles are fun and full of surprises. With that being said, they aren't too awe inspiring, and didn't evoke a jaw dropping moment for me. Oh, one more thing. The enemies look nothing like the ones in the God of War franchise, and there's more of a variety.

Miscellaneous - Without a doubt, this has to be the most macabre game I've ever played! If you have an aversion to blood and nudity, it might be in your best interest to stay away from this one. There's not much to offer in the exploration department because of the fixed camera (ok, that IS similar to God of War lol). I've always heard about how short this game was, but I spent 15 hours on it, and that's not a short game. Well, here's something that could bother some people (although I didn't really care). Towards the end of the game, you'll have to endure 10 'trials'. These are very similar to the optional challenge maps that are popular in today's action game genre. I'll admit that some of them are hard, but just make sure you make use of your relics, and you'll be fine.

I honestly don't have anything bad to say about Dante's Inferno. It exceeded my expectations in pretty much every category. I'm really hoping for a part II somewhere down the road, but we'll see. There's one important piece of information that I want readers to come away with after reading this review. This is NOT a God of War clone! Sure, they're both action games; but I could argue that this game is a little better than the first God of War. That's right, I said it! If you're planning on retiring your PS3 in favor of the PS4, you owe it to yourself to play this game. Go ahead, it might surprise you. Jak & Daxter III, you're up next!
