The product is shipped in a normal heavy box, but not sturdy enough for shipping, so the product arrived in a box that was battle worn, ripped open, and re-taped by the shipping company. At first glance, we assumed we may be missing some parts, but no worries, the pins are installed and the instructions and included plastic red flag were rolled up and inserted in one of the end tubes.
We purchased this product to use as a canoe hauler for our SUV and Pick-Up Truck.
This product is easy to use and very sturdy. The product is heavy steel painted black (touch up with a can later when it shows weathering) and has 5 adjustable holes for fitting various heighth SUV's or Pick-Up beds. The included pins and side bolts are high quality and well made. (No issues with the hole alignment or out of square on ours)
I installed the product from box to SUV in under 40 seconds. This is a no brainer...it's steel, it's inexpensive, and much easier to use than other types of carriers.
After reviewing similar products and systems, reading reviews and comments, this one stood out as high quality for value.
-The max load per label is 350 lbs. It's steel, use common sense, because in various configurations, physics are going to change the load factor.
-It's well built, heavy and the hitch bar stores in the cross bar for easy storage.
For the money we spent I am very pleased with the quality, design and ease of use of the product.
Extend-A-Truck can carry just one canoe, but also other things. You can put it on in about one minute and another 30 seconds to strap it down. Much easier for one man to load, and the canoe slips in under the Tonneau or folding bed cover. There isn't anything that comes with the Extend-A-Truck that holds the bow of the canoe down in the front of the bed, so you will need to buy a strap and feed it through the bow of the canoe (unless you have a bed cover). One negative with Extend-A-Truck is that sticking a 16 foot canoe in an 8 foot bed makes your truck really long, and it can be tough to maneuver in tight parking places, or even driving off road where you might need a tight turn around a tree or up a steep hill and the Extend-A-Truck can hit the ground.
If I needed to go a very long distance, say, a hundred miles, or if I needed to stop over in a place where someone could steal my canoe, I would use the tall racks because it's so much tighter and more secure. But when I only need to go a short distance, it's awesome. I use my canoe twice as much now because it's so quick and easy to take it places. There's a lake just five miles from home and I wouldn't fish it after work because it was a hassle to get the canoe on the racks. Now I can.
The two pieces fit one inside the other and the overall length is short enough that I can store it behind the seat of the truck until needed. The tubing is heavy enough gauge to support the rated load with no flexing. The two pins needed to attach it to a hitch receiver and to connect the two pieces are provided. The cross bar as multiple holes so I could adjust it for the height of the bed of my truck.
There are end loops to use to tie a load and secure it to the bar. The center post also works well as an attachment point for lumber and pipe.
I saw similar racks selling for more than twice as much that provided often less strength and no more versatility than this one. Usually after I have tried something like this I see things that I would improve in the design but not so with this bed extender.
I'll probably throw some spray paint on it to help slow it down, but it's structurally ok still.
I like to go out on the lake solo when my partner is not available, and I can easily load my kayak by myself.
I bought reflective tape to increase visibility on the road and put it on both the horizontal and vertical parts. It does come with one red flag for the back of the load, but I will purchase more durable flags. I have used this for the past three weeks, and driven over highways and rough, rutted unpaved logging roads. No problems at all! I highly recommend this product. It's very stable and easy to install and take off the truck to store. A locking pin for the hitch will keep it from being stolen while you are on the water.
