I will admit there IS a self-contained story here. Darcy has magical powers inherited from his mother, who was a witch, but he has never bothered to properly train in order to use them. In his arrogance and pride, he attempts a spell and messes it up royally. He is in Hertfordshire with Charles Bingley, the only other person who know of his powers, seeking a hermit who can help him undo the spell. While there, the pair come across Jane and Elizabeth - witches who have inherited powers from their maternal grandmother - at an assembly, and we get into quasi-traditional Pride and Prejudice mode. Elizabeth overhears their questions about local witches as well as Darcy's insult, and she is suspicious that they might be witch hunters (witchcraft is illegal), but Jane is already half in love with Charles.
I always enjoy Ms. Silkstone's writing. There are a lot of witty passages, especially pertaining to Caroline Bingley: "Darcy sat at the writing desk swatting Miss Bingley aside like a pesky insect, as she buzzed around him pollinating him with compliments on everything from his posture to his penmanship." "The woman could not be more dense if she were thickened with flour." Ms. Silkstone does enjoy tormenting Miss Bingley, who keeps sprouting a bird feather from her chin and having to rush off to another room and pluck it out, courtesy of Jane.
Considering the subject matter, obviously this is a lighthearted book. Along with Jane and Elizabeth, there are their familiars, a cat named Pyewacket and an owl named Tristan. There's Fiona Feelgood, a witch who lives in Broom Cottage and specializes in love spells, and Herman the hermit (60s bands, anyone?). There's a strange yellow-eyed cat wearing a red and gold collar. And, as you note when you look at the bookcover, there's a very important frog.
Darcy's predicament is resolved by the end of the book. No cliffhanger there.
However, the final scene at Broom Cottage is where he proposes to Elizabeth, she refuses, and they argue. As he leaves, he presents her with a sealed message to her from another gentleman, which turns out to be an invitation for the following week. Within moments, there is someone at the door who grabs Elizabeth, pulls her onto his horse and rides off with her. End of book.
The sequel is due for release in spring, 2016.
I can't wait for the next book in the series.
