So often we find ourselves head down, busy managing our jobs. Then one day we look up and realize we haven't been managing our career. Executive Recruiter and Career Coach Angee Linsey saw this pattern repeat as she talked to hiring leaders and candidates, who while successful, they were not being intentional in their career decisions. With her deep network of exceptional communications leaders, she set out to learn from the best. Through their discussions, she uncovered what they did to manage their career well, what they look for in those they hire and mentor, and most importantly the best advice they've received and the advice they share. Within this book she shares those insights along with her own perspectives to give mid-to-senior communications professionals information they can use to level up their career.

Angee Linsey's Dare to be Deliberate can be as life-changing to mid-career communications professionals as Dale Carnegie's How to Win Friends and Influence People is to its audience. - Steven Smith, Global External Communications Leader
"Angee speaks the language of communications. She understands what it takes to be successful in this field and shares these tips in Dare to be Deliberate. As a recruiter she has found incredible talent for me at the mid and senior leader level in two different organizations. Not only does she know how to find who I need, she understands what motivates candidates to make a good career move." - Caroline Shaw, Executive Vice President, Jackson Family Wines

"Communications professionals looking for real-world, authentic career advice now have a 'must read' in Angee Linsey's Dare to be Deliberate. You'd be hard pressed to find another single resource with straight talk from communications leaders at the top of their fields -- especially in such a concise and well organized format. This book is something I wished I'd had years ago as I entered mid- and senior-level communications roles. Sage counsel from Angee and her contributors abounds, for those who Dare to be Deliberate." - Mark Dollins, President, Northstar Communications Consulting

"Be deliberate" is a wonderful piece of advice - many expert voices contribute to this book, and Angee ties their advice together in a coherent and cohesive guide. One of the contributors, David Albritton, is a Naval Academy classmate and I've heard him deliver some of these messages to groups of PA professionals and to me as I was at a crossroads in my career, looking to break up to the next level. Nice to see him as one of Angee's quoted experts. They all have solid, meaningful advice - read it closely and take it to heart!
I also love that she cited "What Got You Here Won't Get You There" - that's a book that I stumbled on just as I needed it. And, her "Notes from Angee" comments throughout the book tie everything together nicely!
Dare to be Deliberate is a wonderful book with MANY actionable insights -- things that you can DO and not just know to move DELIBERATELY to your next level. I'm putting this put this on my recommend list for up-and-coming PR folks looking to move to bigger things - the earlier they read this, the better!
I read the book with a pen in hand to underline, put notes in the margins, and put thoughts in my notebook. It made me think and I got a lot of value from doing the exercises, especially "Creating Your Career Vision" at the back of the book. Linsey gives a ton of good advice throughout the nine easy-to-read chapters so by the time you hit the Vision exercise you've had a chance to think A LOT about where you fit, what you're good at or need to work on, and where you want to go with your skills and preferences.
Highly recommended. NOT one of those 30,000-foot books with no practical advice, this one will make a difference whether you're planning your career or you are ready to make a change right now.
Angee Linsey includes refreshingly candid quotes from C-suite executives about their own careers—derailments and all—as well as practical advice for a satisfying professional life. From climbing the ladder and dealing with company politics, to being mentored, to whether you should go out on your own, Linsey’s hand-picked interviewees spill the tea. (And her subjects are diverse, not just in the usual ways, but in their career trajectories and current affiliations: the book features leaders from a Fortune Top 10, as well as foundations, tech companies, and non-profits).
As befits Linsey’s diverse background (executive recruiting, corp comms, and PR), her own advice is interwoven throughout—and it’s both compassionate and actionable. (BTW, I’ve met Angee professionally and socially, and she’s just what you’d think from reading this book: savvy, kind, and very knowledgeable.)
