After a career ending injury, Alex Dare (26)...ace Quarterback..can no longer play pro football. He's a charming yet arrogant and proud man coming to terms with the changes of early retirement forced on him. He can be tender hearted and kind. His feelings of inadequacy and insecurity are foreign to him. He pushes friends, family and team-mates away, mistaking their concern and support for pity. He ends things with Madison. After all (he feels), he doesn't "do" relationships...ever; and things were getting too emotional with her anyway. But the worst shame he's ever felt [after the dust settles]... was the brutal way he ended things with Madison. He burned his bridges with her, never realizing until too late that she meant so much more to him.
There's not much of a story here. Mainly two people trying to overcome their differences and issues while being attracted to each other. A little bit of drama...nothing big. Character descriptions trickle in. I don't know about you, but I need a strong descriptive visual to connect to the main characters. It never happened for me. There are a few loose threads and holes. This story didn't interest me enough to make me want to read the other "Dare" stories. If you like predictable romantic drama that goes down easy, you'll love this story.
After the football accident that ended his career, he has been drifting along without purpose. It is high time he find a purpose in his life ... and a means to earn some income that will not embarrass him.
Working alongside Madison and under his half-brother Ian is not a perfect solution. Communicating with Madison on a daily basis is a great opening for him to rebuild the relationship he threw away. He knows it and he is ready to grovel if need be.
This story is about trust and letting go of negative emotions. Trust is not built in a day and requires constancy. How can you trust anyone who is not willing to let go of his harmful ways? Alex must convince Madison he has grown and changed. The limelight no longer lures him like before and he is willing to commit to a greater cause. Alex has his work cut out for him!
Again we have here a story in Carly Phillips unique style that draws us in to the real problems our characters must face. Passion and lust is not enough. Our characters have to make real life decisions regarding the obstacles that face them. I love it when a flawed character recognizes the the need to work on his problems and grows during the course of the story. Both Alex and Madison face their problems and make the decisions they must in order to move on and grow. Really enjoyed reading this story!

The chemistry between Madison and Alex was hot, and I liked that Alex worked to prove he had changed after the way he treated her in the past. But also that he didn't give up when things got tough with Madison.
It was also great to read more about Ian and Riley, and also to see how their dads choices effected Alex and his own reasons for always wanting to have a proper relationship with Ian.
And I would definitely recommend Dare to Desire and will be checking out more from this series in the future.
Madison had a hard life growing up but she got through it and when she met Alex through her friendship with Riley she fell hard for him and he let her down like everyone else in her life except her foster mother and Riley.
Alex has issues that stem from his Father Robert Dare having another family who has his name and he doesn't until the secret is revealed when he is a teenager, he goes through a lot in this book with health and love and loss of a career he loved.
