Product Description

Yanni ~ Dare To Dream

Amazon.com

Yanni tacitly announced he was becoming a kinder, gentler, more thoughtful musician with the release of this 1992 studio recording. The triumphant surges and tympani-powered sonic eruptions that often distinguished his earlier works are replaced here by greater emphasis on billowy clouds of stardust. Yet even on its own subdued terms, Dare to Dream is largely an attractive package designed for Yanni's legions of newer fans who discovered him on Oprah or PBS. If you remember to program your CD-player to skip "Aria," a shrill, operatic oddity, you'll discover the album's strengths lie in its more energetic compositions--particularly "Desire" and "You Only Live Once." On the quiet side, the affecting "To the One Who Knows" is a soul-searching gem that bears repeated listening. --Terry Wood

Most of Yanni's releases before this CD were compilations of earlier works. This was his first all new work in quite a while. And I still consider it his best work to date. This CD contains most of the pieces used in his "Live at the Acropolis". The "Live" CD and Video have a better performance of these pieces however, because of the added instrumentation. But in the realm of his non-live recordings, this is his best.

This album- imaginative and jovial in its nature- is a break from usual Yanni music in that it has taken a somewhat lighter turn. Most of the songs in this album contain hummable, extremely enjoyable melodies, which includes "Once upon a Time" and "Face in the Photograph." "Aria" is a variation from a French Opera and stands out as the unique vocal piece. You'll love this album as a medicine for your stress and hard day's work.

Lately, I've been listening to all of Yanni's newer albums, that I thought were really GOOD. And when I found this one, I couldn't believe I'd missed it!! The professinal reviews on here are confusing, don't get them wrong. The music in here isn't slow and draggy, it's a mix. 'You Only Live Once' is probably the fastest paced one on here. But it doesn't mean the others are boring. The CD starts out interesting, with the first track, and then 'Nice to Meet You' plays, and, well, it's just plain beautiful. The songs are jam-packed with rythim and feeling. Strings, drums, synthizisers etc. Every instrument Yanni ever used, only now playing slower. And yes, 'Aria' is on here, but who cares? Why are people so peeved by that one anyway?! At least the women are going in tune, and are not screeching at the top of their lungs like some stupid rock band. Every song on this CD has personality, gets you imagining, can easily make you SOB also, espcially ones like 'So Long my Friend' and others. BUY this CD, if you want Yanni in a slightly slower ,more calming, but vividly pictured scene.

Another amazing album from an amazing contemporary composer. All tracks are simply soothing and mind blowing. If you have a highly refined musical taste then you will appreciate this album. He won a Grammy for this album. Must own CD. Also check out Yanni's DVDs.

Yanni's Dare to Dream has long been the music of my dreams. Restful. Rejuvenating. Mind-calming. When I've had a hard day, when the week has been stressful, when otherwise those teeth-clenched nerves are frayed, I can always lean on Dare to Dream, a soothing Epsom Salts bath finished with a coconut oil massage along with a refreshing Chia Colada to wake up refreshed the next day. Treat yourself today!

Yanni's "Dare to Dream", is a one of a kind album, possessing both power and strength with striking elegance and calmness. It possess a strong positive message that every song holds secretly, and that is, to always "run" after your dreams and desires, and they will eventually become a reality. Compared to the other albums, "Dare To Dream" generally is more graceful and smoother. Combining different musical styles and instruments ranging from classical to jazz and from the sweet sounding violin to the powerful and versatile sound of the keyboards, makes a unique, uplifting, and at the same time emotionally capturing form of music that is dominant in this album. From the delightful and elegantly smooth piano and violin dominant notes of "So Long My Friend", "To the One Who Knows" and "In The Mirror" to the the fast paced and surreal sounding of "You Only Live Once" and " Nice To Meet You" and the mysterious and exotic Mid-eastern influence on "Desire", this album will always continue to live as one of the best compositions of our time. Truly a special and excellent treat to our ears and a great strengthener for the soul and mind.

After reading all the gushy praise I felt a little let down by the reality: while Yanni's music is occasionally inventive and often catchy, it is FAR, FAR from ground-breaking or original. With the possible exception of Desire and Aria, this album all sounds like more of the same reworked material from "Reflections of Passion." In fact, this overwhelmingly monolithic wall of sameness of sound runs through most of his albums with the possible exception of Optimystique, an early album for which he almost sounds apologetic--as if he's sorry he'd not yet quite mastered the art of making every song uniformly homogeneous in texture. (That faux harmonica patch--which he uses in Reflections, too--is really getting tiresome!).

But perhaps I set the bar too high.... In conventional 80s pop and rock music there was often a synthesizer intro followed by a repetitive, trite, and disappointing collection of end-rhyming sentence fragments called lyrics/chorus. Sometimes the bridge was a break from the monotony, but often it was just chords. I often wished the intro would lead to variations and become the whole song.
There are rare--usually one-off hits--in popular music when this happens: Joe Meek's "Telstar," Hank Marvin's "Apache," Mason Williams' "Classical Gas," Gershon Kingsley's "Popcorn." I don't think Yanni had even a single really outstanding song like these, but his nominal quality level completely demolishes that of most rock/pop/electronic/r&b trash. We've sunk pretty low when Popcorn is too complex ("It has too many notes!") for the typical music enthusiast!

By about the age of 13, I figured out that the loathsomely named "New Age" music is what I'm looking for.
