This Story was so Wonderful, Prunella & Robert were wonderfully written characters.

I am uncertain as what to wite without giving the Story away.
Just know that Pru wrote stories for a magazine in regards to the Duke of Bedwin.
Robert was hurt, humiliated & was seen as a murderer & didn't wish to return to any social events.
His uncle is helping him find a wife & he is surprised by Pru & the way she responds to him.

I am looking forward to reading the next book in this series.

This story is scary because one woman who saw what her mother endured in her marriage, has chosen to vilify the Duke of Bedminster because of rumors of how he abused his wife and drove her to ride her horse so hard she broke her neck. She wrote a novel that in those days was published by a magazine in chapter segments. When the Duke of Bedminster goes looking for another wife, because of his duty to produce an heir, he goes to his uncle to help him find a woman who is practical and intelligent. His uncle chooses his favorite wallflower, Prudence. What Prudence learns devastates her, and changes the ending of her book to the surprise of herself and her editor. I found the Duke quick to forgive Prudence after she changes the ending. He knew enough about Prudence when courting her that she was not marriage minded and why. It should not have shocked him that she found her independence in writing. The clues were all there; ink on her hands, her wit and intelligence, her no nonsense way of things. The dare that this series is based on is really secondary, the only thing that the dare provides is a way for these wallflowers to step out of their comfort zones. Like Prudence's dare to dance at midnight, she didn't have to dance with the Duke. She could have danced alone, but she wanted the rest of her club to take their dares just as seriously. The characters are charming and well-developed, even with horrible faults. It actually makes me like them more.

Was this a totally original plot? No. Were there any unusual twists and turn to surprise any reader? Nope. But, still I was totally engrossed in the story and have already purchased the next in the series. I love wallflower stories. And, hey, here we have TEN wallflowers, all supposedly unmarriageable for a variety of reasons. They band together and form a "book club" that also serves as a support system. Prunella Chuffington-Smythe (have you ever come across a more unfortunate name?) is one of the wallflowers and is dismayed when the first book reviewed in the club is the one that she is secretly writing as a serial for a magazine. She has patterned the villain of the piece after a Duke who is rumored to have killed his wife. When she actually meets the real Duke, she is dismayed when he seems to take an interest in her. The characters are well done and their back stories provide their motivation for their actions. The side characters are also interesting and the dialogue is excellent. I enjoyed this book and am looking forward to the next one.

Sexual situations (I only remember one) may offend some readers

Each book in the series can be read as a stand-alone

Prue is finding success writing stories for The Ladies Weekly Review. A new chapter is printed every week about a villainous Duke. Her villain is based on Robert, the Duke of Bedwin. Robert wants to remarry, someone plain and self sufficient. No love, no scandals. His life was destroyed by his first wife's infidelities and damaging rumors before and after her death. Robert's been very hurt and withdrawn. These stories in the rag make him really angry. On his uncle's advice he pursues Prue as his wife. After their introduction, he repeatedly proposes , but Prue always says "NO." Hmmm. The question is why? A young lady who wants to be independent, Robert has to change her mind. He's not giving up until she says "Yes." A Duke, not a villain, can surely come up with a very clever way of persuading her to change her mind...or does he really need it? Robert is a hero to remember.

Prue (I don’t’ blame her for not using her given name so I’m not going to use it here), is a wallflower, but she does not bemoan her position, due to her parents’ marriage she has no desire to marry, and her plans for the future require no man. Prue is a writer, writing under a false name in The Lady's Weekly Review, her work is gaining notoriety and fame, with many thinking the villain in her story is based on the real Duke of Bedminster, with many believing he killed his wife.

The Duke of Bedminster, has no wish to marry after the disaster of his first marriage, but he knows his duty and the need for an heir, and so he gathers himself to locate a wife, and when his uncle recommends Prue – who is loyal and intelligent, well the Duke decides she will be the women he weds, now if only he could persuade her.

The chemistry between Prue and Robert was clear, especially after the midway point, and as a couple I enjoyed them, however they are not a couple that will remain potently in my mind. There was a fire/spark in the authors depiction of them and events that was missing, although there were moments were glimmers of that spark were tangible.

I did expect the Duke to be a tad broodier, the shift from him being wary to in-love for me didn’t feel seamless/entirely natural, and I wanted the banter between the two main character to be snappier throughout the book, still this was a nice, albeit predictable read. The characters were engaging, but they didn’t grasp my attention and keep it ensnared in an iron grip.

This is a light HR book, the two main characters work well together, and I enjoyed this enough that I have started reading book 2.

There is a story line here which could be good but is being held back. More editing and trimming would improve the pace as it is pedestrian in places. Perhaps the author felt obliged to write a certain minimum number of words? Sometimes less is more. A cottage is a small rural building, not something to be found in the centre of Regency London. Some of the behaviour is modern American too, not Regency English. Throw in some typos as well, and what should be a good plot ends up grating on my nerves. Not one for me and, sorry, but I won't be continuing in the series.
