Review
"There is not another person who has been through the fire quite like Larry. He really has been through just about everything . . . from BUDS/Navy Seal training to business to cancer. It really is quite the epic story." --B. Bufton, Publisher, Church.org
"It was a great read . . .tremendously inspirational! I became misty-eyed more than once while reading it."--SEAL Team Commander A. Davis
"God has given Larry a great reservoir of gentle strength and quiet fortitude that equipped him with the ability to not only exceed his own expectations but to inspire and encourage other trainees like me to succeed." --G. Cortise, SEAL, BUD/S Class 89
"I witnessed this man who would rather drown trying than give up his dream of becoming a SEAL. Somehow, someway, he made it through that night. It became an inspiration for me and others who witnessed his fortitude and perseverance. Frankly, I thought he would surely quit or drown. Larry became a shining example of never giving up on your dream." S. Rawding, SEAL, BUD/S Class 89
Dare to Live Greatly: The Courage to Live a Powerful Christian Life by L.C. Fowler is a fantastic and uplifting memoir and guidebook chronicling a tadpole's beginnings into a fearless Special Warfare Community. Fowler encourages readers to live a powerful Christian life through his lessons learned as a Basic Underwater Demolition SEAL (BUD/S) training in 1977 in Coronado, California. His book is more than a telling of life in the BUD/S training; his book gives others the motivation and insight they need to push forward to thrive beyond life's fears and comfort zones.
Developing fearless perseverance is only the first lesson in this book, as the author speaks on zeal, faith, facing the impossible to becoming a tenacious, wise warrior with absolute resolve for running the race well and finishing. Readers will not be able to put this book down! Every page is power packed with the how-to become great and thrive!
Fowler gives an invitation - an amazing invitation - to live a life courageously expecting more, doing more, and obtaining more that you every thought possible. This book is one for those that want to do something great yet need the push and inspiration to do so. Readers will discover that a heartfelt attitude of overcome means just that...to overcome until you win...whatever the cost and that giving up is not an option, nor is just surviving - TO THRIVE is the goal. His book is a solutions-based to some of life's greatest obstacles.
Coupled with great quotes from noteworthy evangelists like Billy Graham and memorable sayings that give deep insight from those who have gone before us, he poses a unique question within this, What are you starving for? We should all be starving for something worthwhile. ~ is his answer.
Each chapter offers a step inside peek at the Navy Seals training program; programmed to break you, and if that's not enough, his story on what it took for him to graduate and win. He gives life-lessons that are invaluable, as he has learned from experience along the way each give a snapshot of the jaw-dropping and grueling training in the Navy Seal training. Only the best win. Chapter twenty-six is one of my favorite chapters: When You're Down to Nothing, God is up to Something! The author blends the truth of circumstances can appear to be, yet points readers to a greater cause, giving immense hope for the breakthrough that only God can bring in these intense life situations. A highly recommended must read. CBM Book Reviews
From the Author
Every day at Basic Underwater Demolition SEAL training (BUD/S)with every evolution is a dangling masterful trap door. Graduating BUD/S Class 89 taught me that there's never a single breath that should be taken for granted. I hope Dare To Live Greatly will take you on a journey of experiencing the pains and trauma and its benefits of learning what it's like surviving not only BUD/S but life itself.
No matter your burdens, conflict with family or friends, loss of a job, or how dire life can be, there's always hope with a bursting light awaiting. Circumstances are not nearly as important as what you do with them.
Running the race to win means seeing life through God's lenses and embracing fear as a blessing and failure as a launching pad. Learn to meet storms as a day filled with sunshine and embrace defeat as an opportunity.
Dare to live bigger than self. Become the Christian leader God wired you to be and live with abundant joy everyday.
From the Inside Flap
To survive this unnerving training you have to be physically tenacious, mentally robust, and prepared to die if necessary. Dare To Live Greatly is a powerful Christian memoir about faith that proves everyone is called to be a victorious warrior in life, just like a Navy SEAL fighting to survive the training. No matter how dire the circumstances, the mind of a SEAL will never give up - nor should any Christian.
When Larry Fowler became a Navy SEAL BUD/S trainee, he could barely swim. Nevertheless, he some how survived 'Hell Week' and graduated.
His belief is that if he can survive Hell Week, you can survive and thrive where you're at right now. Larry says it takes the same grit, courage, and tough-as-nails perseverance as a Navy SEAL in training to live the life of a true Christian leader today.
In his book, Dare To Live Greatly, he reveals how faith is continuous, action-packed, and a constantly fulfilling adventure.

This part biography, part look behind the scenes of United States Navy SEAL Training and wholly engaging book is a must read. In fact, the quotes in the book and the fantastic gold nuggets that are shared by the author make this a book that will probably be read over and over again. It is the recommendation of this reviewer that this book be carried personally on a day by day basis with highlighted passages reread daily.
The book begins with a young man's journey and quest to become a prestigious Navy SEAL. The journey is an arduous one for this young man and requires a physical stamina in order to meet the high bar of becoming a SEAL. However, and more in depth, the journey to achieve his goal requires a test of his mental discipline as well as throwing his heart into the entire process of achieving his goal.
The book is replete with wonderful quotes and Scripture passages that underscore the importance of the message that is being conveyed. Additionally, the author speaks to the reader on a personal level and emphasizes the parallels between becoming a SEAL and enduring all of life's challenges for the personal individual.
Of a Navy SEAL, the author writes "Becoming a Navy SEAL is one of the most selfless acts a man can do since he must be willing to give up everything." When he speaks of the seasoned trainers that are committed to making these "tadpoles" into Navy SEALs, he states at the end of the day these trainers not only want the best from the young recruits but they wanted the best for these young recruits.
Another powerful passage asks the reader, "We should all be starving for something worthwhile. What are you starving for? What are you willing to pay whatever price is necessary?
The Courage to Live a Powerful Christian Life by L.C. Fowler is a highly recommended book. The book will most certainly inspire, motivate and encourage the reader. The added impact is the reality of the writers experience coupled with his obvious engagement of the principles, thoughts and ideas that he shares.
