Lucas Donahue is a tough-talking criminal, new parolee, and high-ranking member of the The Sons of Steel Row gang in Boston. All of those attributes don't stop someone from putting a hit out of him though. The only two people he can trust are his brother and best friend...or can he? Good thing he always has an escape plan. But when he unexpectedly comes to the rescue of the sexy bar owner next-door, Lucas finds himself claiming her as his own and putting them both in the cross-hairs of a rival gang, The Bitter Hill gang.
Heidi Greene is a straight-shooting young woman who owns and runs The Patriot, a local bar in the squalor of Steel Row. She's been taking care of herself for a long time and refuses to be pushed around in her own bar. But when a local gang brutally attacks her one night, she knows that she must accept help from the sexy and dangerous gangster if she wants to survive. What she couldn't have predict though was how hard she would fall for the man hiding under the hardened veneer, or what lengths someone might go to in order to use her against him...

With pulse-pounding suspense and a red-hot romance, Dare to Run held me captivated from beginning to end. The dark alleys and docks of Boston provide the backdrop of this tale, and though I have never visited that area, I could easily picture the dirty snow in the streets, the homeless-filled damp alleyways, the energy of Fenway Park and more. Jen McLaughlin has penned a vivid story here that I was immediately pulled into. The protagonists aren't your average contemporary romance couple, you won't find anything light and fluffy about them or their journeys. In fact, Lucas is more of an anti-hero then a hero, and I couldn't have liked him more because of it!

Dare to Run by Jen McLaughlin is the first book in her new The Sons of Steel Row series. This is my first book by McLaughlin and after reading this book, it will not be my last. The cover on this book was hot, but nothing in comparison to our couple, who not only were both tough, savvy, street smart; they totally scorched the pages throughout the story. I loved them both.

Lucas Donahue is our hero, and though he is hot, he is also very dangerous. Lucas grew up in a gang environment after the death of his mother. He took care of his younger brother, Scott, who is also part of the gang that they are members of. After a short stint in prison, Lucas, is now one of his boss’s top men. He thinks nothing of killing those who threaten him, as this is the only life he knows.

Heidi Greene is our heroine, and she owns a bar that was left to her. Heidi is beautiful, tough and also comes from a bad childhood, where she ran away and learned to live on the streets. Heidi’s beauty and sex appeal causes her to be attacked outside her bar, when Lucas comes to her rescue.

Lucas is determined to protect Heidi, not to mention he finds himself attracted to her. The men he killed trying to protect Heidi are members of a rival gang, and Lucas has to say that they tried to attack his women. That claim somewhat lets Lucas off the hook, but it forces both him and Heidi to live together to prove his claim is real; saving both of their lives.

While this is going on, Lucas learns that his brother is working with the rival gang and is planning to kill him. At this point, anything more would be spoilers. What follows is a tense exciting dangerous adventure which puts their lives in danger, with many twists along the way that will reveal some secrets and betrayals.

***CONTENT WARNING: There is a lot of violence, attacks on women and attempted sexual assault. This may make many readers uncomfortable which is why I’m mentioning it. I don’t want to spoil the book, but I don’t want readers surprised and upset about the graphic content either***

Looking at the cover of the book, I thought the story would be the usual bad boy redemption, good girl attracted to the bad boy and story completely full of angst. I’m so glad I was wrong.

DARE TO RUN is not an angst-ridden journey of redemption, it’s a story about a man and a woman, victims of circumstance and their struggles of survival. It’s about a poor neighborhood in Boston where respect is earned through violence in a dangerous sub-culture with unspoken rules in a dog-eat-dog world.

The book grabbed my attention from the start and wouldn’t let go. I fell easily into the Sons of Steel Row universe and became deeply engrossed in the story and the politics of life on Steel Row. The book was exciting, engaging and very dark. There’s also intrigue, betrayal and crazy surprises! Heidi and Lucas had palpable chemistry and were always struggling for dominance in their relationship. It was entertaining and sometimes even comical to watch, like two junk yard dogs fighting over a bone.

I would definitely recommend DARE TO RUN to readers. It is a solid story with an exciting plot and a cast of characters that will have you completely enthralled!

***I was gifted an eBook copy from the publisher via Net Galley in exchange for an honest review. All conclusions reached are my own***
