The bigger issue that you should know about is that all of the metal pieces that this thing is made of are unfinished. I unpacked the box, and before I clamped it in place tried a test piece of clay, putting the clay in and grabbing the machine with my non crank hand from above. This thing immediately sliced my skin wide open from the underside of the rear piece being unfinished. I'm typing this review and currently bleeding.
So yeah, it's cheap (ish), seems relatively well made, but just a warning. Song grab onto this too tightly and certainly don't let kids near it.
Anyway, long story shorter, I didn't pay lots for it, so I decided to just take it apart and see if I could figure out how to make it work as I would expect it to. It's not hard to take apart, altho the clips that hold the scrapers in make it a bit harder to put back together.
Once I cleaned it thoroughly, I checked to see if the scrapers are actually flat and even. They mostly are, but as this is a cheap chinese item, they aren't completely flat, which accounts somewhat for the problems. Also, tightening up the nuts so that there is no wiggle room with the scrapers once they are reinstalled made a difference as well. I won't be returning it as it works much better now. I am using a oil based clay that has medium firmness. I would imagine it may work differently with sculpty or other types of clay.
