Background... I'd become interested in the writings of these two authors after reading their serial thriller, "Yesterday's Gone". An exciting urban sci-fi/fantasy adventure set in modern day America.
The works found in "Dark Crossings" include... general theme <SPOILER> alert
PULL THE TRIGGER -- Ellie gets involve in a caper involving two resort owners: owners with entirely too much time on their hands and more money than they'd ever know what to do with.
CHRIS WAKES UP -- a Zombie tale seen through the eyes of one of the newly infected.
RESPERO DINNER -- reminiscences with Xavier at his farewell dinner extravaganza.
THE VISITOR -- Blind and dying, writer Mary Fletcher has a visitor that offers her a new lease on life... well sort of.
DINER FADED -- an old dilapidated diner in the middle of nowhere gives Zach a glimpse of the past.
* of all the six stories here, 'Diner Faded' is the one that most fits in the mold of the old "Twilight Zone" shows.
THE WATCHER -- Since the brutal death of Jenny, Frank Grimm has lost more that just his young daughter.
Quick, easy reading... every tale, although fairly short, moves along at a nice pace. No dragged out dead spots in any of these short pieces.
All tales are well written and superbly focused on unusual and often macabre goings-on.Read more ›
Six separate tales that have nothing in common other than being a compelling read. Each story had me holding my breath and unable to put it down. This collection is the perfect answer for those times when you don't want to stop reading 'till the end but the real world interferes and you must put the book down. You can read any one of these stories from beginning to end on a coffee break, a lunch hour or just that magic time when you have a few minutes to put your feet up. The one thing I will promise you is that you will be thinking about these "short stories with killer endings" long after you have finished reading.
If you haven't read their work yet give this book a try and you'll see what all the excitement is about!!!!!
The only story that disappointed, for me, was Respero Dinner. I knew what the ending was the minute I started reading. But even that disappointment of suspense was overshadowed by the depth of character and relationships painted by Sean Platt.
The Authors Notes, placed at the end of each story, offered insight into the writing craft. I usually skip over, or dislike, "Forwards" or explanatory material in a book. Give me the story and let it stand on its own. But these Authors Notes gave me an Inside Baseball look into the creation and collaboration process of Platt and Wright.
All in all, well done. An excellent read, and a good introduction to some amazing authors. Looks like there's a full plate of Platt and Wright books and serials to check out. See you later!
