What I received was a 9X7 inch shrunken version of the original book that was issued a few years ago. The print is tiny and all the images and photos are reduced. SUPER DELUXE BUMMER! I am returning this. It's even smaller than a magazine fer chrissakes. It boggles the mind why they would do this, when they know full well how devoted the fan base is, how successful the first issue was, and how willing we are to spend money on this franchise. Is it greed on the part of the publishers, or just plain stupidity? Even this cheapo version states on the back cover that it includes removable inserts, which proves they just reprinted a shrunken version of the first book. This is actually fraud, when you think of it, because this is a twelve dollar book at best, but by charging the same price as the deluxe version they know they are deceiving the buyer into thinking he/she is getting the real thing.
Consider yourself forewarned!
I started reading this book the moment it was delivered and couldn’t put it down. My little cat Billy even joined me. The pic I took was too precious to not post with my review. :)
The artwork is mesmerizing for fans. The reading is informative but not dry. I HIGHLY recommend this book to any Dark Crystal fan. It’s worth every penny. You’ll find hidden treasures IN the book too, which was a pleasant surprise.
As a fan of The Dark Crystal since the mid 80s, this was a wonderful page-turner that combines information and imagery from various other publications, but also contains a ton of surprises of its own -- like, that Frodo stuntman and actor Kiran Shah was the stand-in for Jen.
Any book collector out there familiar with other Insight Editions releases such as Labyrinth, Harry Potter, Fantastic Beasts..., et cetera will feel quite at home cracking open this tome -- with a familiar same size and feel. It combines the written word of Mr. Gaines, images from The Henson Group and Insight Editions' layout with recreations (of documents, pamphlets, notes, tickets...) scattered throughout like little treasures.
The movie was an eye-opener on so many levels for me back during my wonder years, it's a such treat to revisit those nostalgic feelings again on a broader level and scope, with even more behind-the-scenes insight that makes the reader and viewer feel that much closer and at one with Mr. Henson and his amazing vision.
I did enjoy the simpler, mock-up book image originally posted (attached), but this Froud schematic circle cover also makes a lot of sense.
I only wish the book had a few pages and/or images of the Gelfling Ruins with the three-leaf motif found throughout the ruins and on Kira's outfit.
A few images could've been larger, sharper -- out of the writer's control -- but overall the book by Mr. Gaines is a must-have compendium.
5 stars for that.
1 star for the seller.
I feel misled by the seller, as they did not change the description of the ORIGINAL edition of this book to reflect the fact this is a NEW printing of the book.
So, don't order this version if you are expecting a large coffee table book with pull out illustrations, because this version is NOT that.
This is a very small, compact edition of this book. There are no big illustrations to pull out; none of the gorgeous details that are noted in the original edition.
I am kicking myself for not buying this 2 years ago at full price. I am also mad at myself for assuming that the much cheaper price was just a result of it being on the market for so long.
I really detest bait/switch tactics, and feel that by not updating the description, this seller did exactly that to many of us who really wanted this book.
Again. The book is fine for content, etc. I love the Dark Crystal.
It's just not what was described or what I thought I was actually receiving.
Book: 5 stars. Seller: 1 or less for being dishonest.

A truly incredible and exhaustive book, HOWEVER!! This is a truly petty criticism, but I know there will be people out there on my wave length: The whole book seems to be written in the Times New Roman font, or at least some other default Windows fault. This unintentionally gives the impression that the whole book was written by a High School student in Microsoft Word. Yes, a petty criticism. But I was always taught to change from the default font to demonstrate that you had some basic presentational skills. It's crazy to me they never bothered for this.
lots of nice info and pictures all about the movie and its production.
would have like more of the mythos and extended universe but its ultimately about just the movie.
