1. This short was written in first person. This is different from Buchman's usual approach, and it worked.
2. I learned more about the two snipers as the short developed. Mira and Kurt are both Delta, and while in "The Unit" can get away with a relationship. I personally like that developing a romantic bond isn't against the rules or a big conflict. It seems natural and understandable that the pair would find each other a perfect fit. The absolute trust between Mira and Kurt on their mission is essential and it makes sense that trust of a teammate and trust of a lover are on the same plane.
3. I enjoyed the fresh setting. Each of Buchman's books seem to have a new and untried 'place' and challenge. Much appreciated.
4. While the story ends abruptly, that's pretty much the expectation of a short story. It ended with enough of a resolution I knew everything was going to be okay. One step better, the reader knows the value of the romance between the lead characters. And for these two baggage-laden soldiers, the value of that "home" found with each other means a great deal more than to the average Joe.
Well done, Mr. Buchman.
