Thompson is author of YA fantasy series, The Dark Eve, epic adventure packed novels with an endless amount of fun. She also enjoys co-staring in The Ride Home Review Podcast, where film pundit Dustin Thompson and she do their best to improve movies by rewriting the story on the fly. She's a huge fan of Thrillers, Genre Movies, Dancing with the Stars, Stranger Things, and Gerard Butler…sing to me, Phantom. She loves chocolate milk…mmm…good, steak, and I am pretty sure she eats a whole Costco apple pie in December. She has her BA in business and is a mother of three awesome children. T.K. is usually helping out with homework, dropping kids off at (dance, gymnastics, and soccer), or cooking some awesome concoctions with her hubs. Thank you Food Network. She loves writing entertaining reads filled with deep characters and stories littered with twists and turn leaving everyone on the edge of their seats. She dabbles in sewing stuff…note it doesn’t always work out. She is a fierce writer with Netflix always playing in the background. A girl has got to have some noise in her life. I share the above information because it makes clear the danger I would face, at the point of Acantha’s sword no less, if I were to share an honest review. Lucky for me, the author really came through. I have read many self-published, first novels. Many I have refused to review simply because I didn’t want to discourage a writer from following their dreams. Little did I know I had nothing to worry about. Whew! It seems I will live to see another day.
Because star ratings are so limited, a 4-star review can translate into many things. In this case it means not only did I really enjoy the story, but also this author is clearly one to watch. When my biggest complaint revolves around editorial issues, especially in a first publication, you know the author has the potential to become great.
As I said at the beginning of the review, I was pleasantly surprised. TK captured my attention early and was able to keep me engaged throughout the majority of the story. I found myself asking questions, trying to figure out where she was leading, and being totally blindsided by the ending. It is rare for an author to give me a “didn’t see that one coming” moment. The end of the book definitely accomplished that.
The characters were distinguishable from one another and believable. I chuckled a few times trying to figure out which of TK’s family members inspired certain characters. She definitely nailed the sibling dynamic!
The author’s imagination translated into a great story. The story was free from plot holes, another rarity among new authors. There was a good balance between present action, character development and flashbacks to illuminate the past. The world building was descriptive enough to experience, and concise enough to not be mind-numbing. The content was clean with no profanity, vulgarity, or sexual content. As this is a pirate adventure, there is some violence that might be a bit much for very young readers. However, for adults and teens alike this is definitely a great read.
The next volume in the series, The Dark Eve: A Witch’s Curse, is due out later this summer. I look forward to continuing the adventure.
Well done, TK!
Obviously the first of many stories about Acantha and her pirate adventures, but not like you have ever seen before. Tamara's imagination brings powerful imagery to life and puts each character through test after test in a life that not familiar to us. Take the journey and enjoy escaping into the world of The Dark Eve.
