I almost said, she hides in plain sight, but actually her appearance is completed shifted by the "dark glamour" of the title. Thanks to a spell and a bottomless purse (courtesy of her out-of-sight husband Malcolm), innocent blond Jane gets to swank around New York and London as model-tall, model-glamorous Elle, a sultry brunette with a wicked sense of humor and a lot more confidence in her powers.
This shift is echoed by a much lighter story. Although the tension continues to build, Jane believes she has found a way to get her mother-in-law off her back and help a young woman with a similar history to her own find her family and claim her powers. In addition, Jane's friends supply a better foil for her shift from clueless victim to "good witch".
I forgive Pierce for the blatant telegraphing of the plot gimmick, since the story is otherwise well-told and fairly well balanced. (And because every good thriller deserves a cliff-hanger ending!)
He had also stashed the cash for her. His mom had revealed a plan he couldn't live with. She wanted Malcolm and Jane to get busy; when Jane gave birth to a daughter, Jane would be killed.
After all, she wouldn't be needed any longer. Magic is passed through the women of the family.
This story opens with Jane down to her last penny. Never fear!! She discovers a safe deposit box with a checkbook and something special, too.
This allows Jane to move from her trash heap motel to something more than adequate. She decides to share her good fortune with a friend who helped her a great deal in the previous book (666 Park Avenue),Dee. Just in time, too. Dee feels like she's been taking advantage of her bookstore-owning friend.
Jane can do nothing but think of Malcolm, so Dee and her friend decide to try a spell using the object the banker gave Jane.
They don't see Malcolm because the object belonged to someone else, someone they believed was dead. Jane's response is so intense the object blows up.
But Jane HAS to repeat this event. She has to find another object belonging to this person.
The only place she'll find such an object is at 666 Park Avenue. To gain trust, to verify her findings, Jane will try an obscure experiment, break her wedding vows and travel to England and back.
But even then, how can you find a person who was declared dead 15 or so years ago? How do you convince that person you're telling the truth?
And why, oh why didn't you leave well enough alone?
This is another book with more twists than a mountain highway.
This book is set after Jane has married Prince Pretty Creepy Charming and fled with him for her life away from his powerful witch mother. She is alone now, but afraid to use her powers for fear of being tracked. She is of course RICH as any decent heroine with great clothes, architecture, and looks must be. I mean we want to escape up, not down. I know what shlubby, crummy clothes look like. Also like any self respecting heroine, she cannot let well enough alone, she just has to retangle. Of course if she takes a mental leap away, there would be no story, or only a story of hiding in truly splendid hides holes.
It's fun. Literature it isn't. Given the movie Devils Advocate, it isn't that original, but everything doesn't have to be Shakespeare. I mean with aKindle, no one knows if you are reading this or physics!,,
The only thing I didn't care much for was the ending, and how abrupt it seemed, and how it really does leave you hanging, so you're stuck buying another book to get any closure. I think that the whole serial book format is getting to be over-done, and not every book/story needs to be carried on over several books/sequels/etc.etc.etc. I can understand why an author would want to cash in on a winning title, but that's all it seems to be (trying to squeeze more money out of a story) IMO. So I haven't decided whether I'll read the next one or not. I might borrow it from the library, but I think I'm done purchasing serial books, except for maybe one series that I really like and think it is series-worthy.
