Suicidal feelings make Dominic an interesting vampire character. He is a youngling, meaning that he was recently turned and is unable to cope with the circumstances. His sire didn’t train him and he can’t “control the beast”. Really, he’s more like a vigilante vampire in my opinion. He does kill people but he chooses who to target. He seems to have a taste for ruthless drug dealers...
In comes his savior...
Cassidy is a no nonsense kinda gal. She moves out of her boyfriend’s mansion and makes her self home in Dominic’s lair. A rental, run down beach property becomes the focal point of the story. The romance is slow in coming and I mean SLOW! Lots of resistance on Dominic’s end and who can blame him? He is very attracted to Cassidy and is afraid that his passion will kill her. They do make a cute couple and reading their exchanges really was fun. However, she is a journalist and must get the latest scoop on a string of murders appearing everywhere. That’s when their worlds collide and the action parts were fast paced and gritty.
Insert the kooky...
Gosh, what more can I say about a wacko but yet endearing vampire? A senior called Serge is part of the key to Dominic’s salvation and the humor that this character injected really lightened up the story. He was my favorite character.
My least favorite character?
Jackson. Ugh, I just really did not like him. A little bit condescending and a lot annoying. Grow some balls man.
Something is bugging me...
The one thing that I found a little bit hurried was Cassidy’s acceptance of the whole vampire situation. It was too easy and I’m glad she didn’t freak the heck out, but I was just hoping for more...emotion. Not everyday you discover a paranormal world not known to regular humans.
Anyway, I really enjoyed this story and S.K. Ryder is a new-to-me author. Very enjoyable dialogue and writing style, even though at times it was slow. Will definitely pick up another one of her books. Looking forward to what the rest of this series has in store.
A different spin on the vampire/vampire-hunter theme. It'd been decades since I'd visited Florida, but the author's sharp, senses-driven descriptions put me right there, in a sweltering cottage, a typhoon-threatened beach, a derelict serial killer's lair.
Plus a bookload of sexual tension. Wowza!
Can't wait to read the next two in the series!
I have to say I am not a fan.
