Darkly Delicious

"I feel absolutely head over heels in love with this book! It truly was dark & delicious. Mayhem, death, Demons, Pagans, Druids and a kickass heroine!"

 - Taking It One Book at a Time (Blog)

From the Back Cover

Claire, the Devil's assistant, knows very little about the world she was dropped into five years ago, when she inherited her mother's unpaid debt to the Demon King. She certainly didn't expect to be a contender for the Fallen Queen's throne, a target for the Druid King's mafia, or a suspect in the murder of Junior, the Devil's oldest hell spawn.

In a last ditch effort to save her life and get out of her deal with the Devil, she sets out to solve Junior's murder only to be taken prisoner by the four most dangerous immortal hell spawn alive.

Not to be out done, the Pagan Queen Mab, claims Claire for entering her realm uninvited. She has an old debt to settle with her brother the Devil. Taking Claire from him after losing her years ago is just icing on the cake.

Will Claire win her freedom, and save herself from the Devil? Or be trapped by Mab forever?

This book started out great: Claire is the Devil's assistant and the Boss has ordered her to go downtown to pick something up for him. Only problem is, she can't go downtown without being attacked and taken hostage by the mobster druids who have apparently been demanding dental for the past 5 years ("no one gets dental").

This is where things start to get a little iffy: it turns out the Boss wanted her to "pick up" a prophecy--a super vague prophecy that somehow happens to be about her? Ok, I could handle that (i mean what UF doesn't have some vague prophecy about the heroine?) but by the time this chick gets back to her office the book basically devolves into a series of extremely confusing scenes in which she is pushed and pulled this way or that way and controlled by someone to do this or that (seriously, for most of the book she basically has no free will).

Every UF trope/element/plot development you can think of happens in rapid succession with little to no build up and only the vaguest (if even that) of explanations. We've got time travel, astral projection, invisibility, multiple personalities, a magic watch that can do more and more with every scene, new mysterious powers and abilities, missing memories, Gods, long lost royal bloodlines, MIA parents, pregnancy, miscarriage, possible rape, I mean I could go on and on! Theoretically there could be enough here to sustain a 4-5 bk series but it's all wasted because it's all undeveloped and crammed into one (ultimately nonsensical) book.

Claire's also a underdeveloped and a bit wooden at times; mostly she just reacts to everything with a "What?!" or Why?! or "I didn't know how I felt about that.

Dark Hope was an incredible read! I didn’t want it to end and I simply couldn’t put it down. I was instantly sucked into the world H.D. Smith created and became so invested in Claire that I had to keep reading. Claire is both smart and strong but she has been dealt a raw deal. I love the way she kept her head and solved problems, learning to use her emerging powers. I felt her hurt and betrayal; my heart ached for her each time she learned a new truth. The action never slows or stops. I think it would be a spectacular movie! The ending was fantastic--everything was tied up perfectly. I cannot remember the last time I enjoyed a book this much. I can’t wait for the sequel!

I haven't written a review in a while but thought I needed to add my two cents for anyone considering this book. This is not a badly written book at all. The world building is quite interesting, the characters less so. Because of the lack of time spent on characterization the story ends up being plot driven in one of the most confusing ways I've ever seen. The heroine lurches literally from one experience to the next with not a single clue as to what is going on - and because the story is told from her perspective that means the reader does too. Confusing, disjointed, shallow - the story took way too long to coalesce into something semi intelligible. Why should we care about Claire? She's kind of a wet rag that gets manipulated by everyone around her including her hot boyfriend - who apparently she likes because he is hot - which we are told over and over. Just an example of not fleshing out the characters which plagues this book. You don't know enough about these characters to care about them. Perhaps more is explained and shown in the second book but I will be passing on a repeat experience

H.D. Smith is a new to me author and I'm glad I was introduced to her latest release, Dark Hope through a blog tour. The synopsis alone caught my attention and the fact it's Urban Fantasy is why I wanted to read it.

This book is like no other story I've read before and I love when authors can create something that takes me on a wild ride I've never been before. Here we have the main character, Claire who is the Devil's assistant. She has his mark due to her taking her mother's debt to the Demon King.

Claire gets caught in the crossfire of her Boss's oldest son, Junior who ends up dead in his office. She becomes determined to find out killed him and may be in the process she finds away to get out of her binding with the demon king. Here is when the story really gets interesting, but of course I'm not going to spoil it for anyone and give away the best parts. H.D. Smith will throw Claire into several obstacles to find out the truth on why certain people want to have her as their pet and why she truly is settling a debt with the Demon King. There's the devil himself (Claire's Boss) otherwise known as the Demon King, the Pagan Queen (who is ruthless as anything...I hated her in the story), and the Druid King (who should be Claire's protector...but yeah..he didn't seem to be). These three all want to either protect, kill, torture, confuse, or stress out Claire in some kind of way in the book. I felt terrible for the girl. That's not all she had to deal with though throughout the book.

Then there's the four hellspawn who are sadistic, crazy, and completely off their chain in their own kind of way that want to hurt Claire. (They play a major role in the story and sometimes I got confused in certain parts of the book with these four.
