Dark Horse is one the newest entries into the KB World. I will be honest, aside from Driven this is the first book in this series that I have read.
The premise, Adrian (father) is a racing superstar, ready to retire and hand over the reins of Dark Horse Racing to a successor… but who will that successor be? Bobby the man that Adrian mentored and is almost like a son to him, or his daughter Adrienne, the rightful heir but a woman in man's world. Adrian issues a challenge to Bobby and Adrienne...whoever has the most race wins at the end of the season will be named the head of Dark Horse Racing.
But there is more to the storyline than races. Adrian has been receiving death threats towards his daughter Adrienne, so he brings in King Security. Yes folks, we got ourselves a hot bodyguard romance now! I like hot bodyguards!
Adrienne started out strong, won’t take crap from anyone kind of gal and then she meets King and sort of loses her strength. Unfortunately, I felt there was more lust than love between King and Adrienne. I love me some growly bodyguards, but I needed him to appreciate and cherish Adrienne sooner than he did.
The storyline was interesting. I have read other books from Ms. Rebecca and I giggled because she threw in some easter eggs that only her readers would understand, I thought that was clever.
Dark Horse was suspenseful and I did stay up all night reading to find out who the stalker was, and I had part of it pegged but there is a twist at the end I did not expect. I enjoyed the suspenseful storyline and plot.
I've been a fan of Jennifer Rebecca since the Goodnight series so I'm always happy to see new material from her! This book is set in K. Bromberg's Driven world and carries all the excitement from that series.
Adrienne Malone is the next big name in the racing world and is working hard to take her place atop all the records her father currently holds. When he unexpectedly announces his retirement from racing, it creates a vacuum at the head of Dark House Racing and there's only two people up for the job, Adrienne and her childhood friend, Bobby, another driver on the racing team. As Adrienne races (pun intended) to take the top time in the next competition and secure her place in DHR, increasingly disturbing threats to her life come pouring in. Her father hires the best security team in the business, King Security and demands the King himself guard his daughter. Little does he know that King is more dangerous than the madman after her.
This book had more turns than the Indy 500! I enjoyed the story very much, even though King's treatment of Adrienne made me see red. They're addicted to each other but they're like a toxic boomerang. I love an alpha male but I would've like a little more of the sweetness of the ending to temper the alphahole he was throughout but thankfully the author did a good job of making us feel for all he was going through near the end. Despite the twists and drama, I knew who the enemies were pretty early on but it was still a great build up! Adored Manny and Eric, great background characters! Dark Horse is a great addition to the Driven world!

Adrienne wants to add to her family’s legacy. She shows that women are just as capable of doing what used to be a man’s sport. She also takes the lead in this story so the reader gets to her mos of her thoughts. There were times where I would have liked to hear what King was thinking but that just helped in getting me to turn the page.
Adrienne has a lot of feelings going on and the author does a great job in showing how it affects her. She helps to feed my need for speed. Having grown up with a family that watched all the auto races available on the television, this story shows how far the sport has come. I always wanted to be behind the wheel of a fast car but during younger days, women were not in the sport until I saw Shirley Muldowney.
Our author goes beyond auto racing by giving me mystery and suspense. We have a brooding alpha male and some really steamy scenes. King was completely opposite to what I would have thought Adrienne was looking for in a man but he was exactly what she needed when the moment is right. I was happiest when I realized that my need for suspense was going to carry me all the way to an end. You’d think I would be happy with that but I wasn’t because that meant my time with this book was also coming to an end. But I have to wonder if I got an ending or not. Guess that means I’ll have to follow the author in order to find out.
