This book had a great premise and our introduction into Tecra is awesome especially the political standing from the citizens point of view. This was brilliant and well done.
What killed me was how this book ended. The other three ended at a point where everything may not have been resolved but we are well on our way. Dark Matter JUST ENDED. What happened and why did the editor not ask where the last few chapters were. It was like the story stopped 3/4 of the way thru and that's it, soooooo disappointing, frustrating and frankly ruined what could have been a great story. I kept looking for more pages and THERE ARE NONE, unbelievable.
with that said, I still enjoyed it, she does write a good story.
In this story, Ms. Diener presents the Tecran as not entirely evil, but merely deceived by some elements of the military and political leaders. It’s an interesting point of view, and adds a depth to the world building, that there is no one society that has no redeeming qualities. The writing, as always, is concise, with plenty of action as well as interaction. The plot isn’t so far-fetched as to be unbelievable and there were no contrived, convenient coincidences.
The romance happens very quickly due to the timeline of the story, but it works. There is no guarantee of an HEA, but based on the relationships of the characters from the former books (and it was nice to see them, however briefly), it’s pretty much a given that the couples will stay together. I’d love to see a novella getting them all back together a few years later just to see how everyone is doing.
I liked this story very much and just wish there could have been more of the Class 5’s hiding out there somewhere. Perhaps there is one more that hasn’t been hatched just yet…
The world building continued to be consistent throughout the book and series. Lucy the heroine and Dray the hero were great together and separately. Lucy seriously ran mental circles around everyone else, although Dray did catch some of what she was doing. Someone clue me in on her earth profession, I suspect psychologist but wasn't quite sure from her description to Dray.
And did anyone really think the Tecran military was going to surrender easily, their crazy just rose a few notches and the straight shooters in the UC weren't crazy enough to foresee their end game.
I'm sad that the current series has ended but the ships figuring out their lives and the girls adapting to their chosen new homes, interacting with other societies, trying to have mixed species children are totally different types of stories. I'm happy to stop here where everyone is in a happy for now.
I highly recommend this book and the 3 previous stories. This book can stand alone but if you like it please go back and read the other three. These books and others are why this author is on by auto-buy list.
Off to reread the whole series back to back, Dark Horse, Dark Deeds, Dark Minds and now Dark Matters. Then the Verdant String, another fantastic space opera, loosely connected series by the author.
Possible spoiler -
Though an opening has been left for the ships to get to earth, probably years or decades after the girls have passed on. I imagine they or their heirs would want one of the ships to check out the state of earth society before first contact is made.
