What they find there is a murder victim, and a great mystery. Of course, it isn't so uncommon these days to base a mystery on real historical figures (for example, Jane Austen solving crime, etc). In this book that combines both the charm of the era, along with a genuinely good mystery, we find the great John of the Cross (Juan de la Cruz) investigating. Of course, many readers will know that he is not only the greatest lyrical poet in the Spanish language, but is also the great doctor of the church, and the writer of mystical texts that are still read, studied, and loved today.
The author has captured the gentle personality that history tells us about, along with the brilliant, inquiring mind. In addition, the author clearly knows a lot about Spain during that period, and the early days of the Carmelite reform.
I really hope this is the first in a series. I recommend it without reservation. It is a fine mystery.
Side note: The dictionary of terms in the back of the book really helps for terms one may be unaware of.
