I read this series when there were only a handful of books and got an itch one night for a reread. Then saw some harsh reviews which I think were unfair. The romance paranormal/vampire genre has blossomed and changed since this novel was written. Are there some better ones out there? Sure. But considering the time in which it was written its still fantastic.
There's a history with a solid background on where the vampires came from and a plot/romance that moves along at a great pace. An alpha male that is trying to save his people and a woman that knows how to handle herself.
Still a good read many years after publication and still a fan.
Dark Prince is a wonderful and very different PR story Carpathians are a race of beings from the earth. They have Not lost theirs souls but those that do by killing while taking blood become Vampire. These Carpathians are the real deal and not this new Vampires who can drink blood from a bottle and walk during the day. Nor do they eat organic food LOL!! They drink real human blood from a host victim by enthrallment, shape shift into any animal or bird. They can even become the wind, air, mist, fog and rain. They have insurmountable strength. They hunt their immortal race that has turned Vampire. This series is sensual, some my even say erotic. Carpathian are very Alpha Alpha male. . Of course Raven doesn't know Mikhail is a Prince and Immortal. She doesn't believe in Vampires. These two are wonderful characters and their love story is very romantic but hard becasue of one is human and the other is Immortal. The road to them coming together is not easy but very adventurous and exciting. Oh and very dangerous. This story will have you on the edge of your seat! The other characters are very well written, even the human hunter villains in the story. I have been reading The Dark Series since this first book was published in 1999. I love this author and this series and I highly Recommend all of Christine Feehan's series to you especially this one and The Ghostwalker series, No it is Not about ghost !! This Dark Prince is the Authors Cut Edition she has added 136 pages more then the original published book. It actually works very well and adds to the greatness of ths first edition book.
Feehan's vampires are not technically the walking undead -- they are alive. They breathe, their hearts beat, they procreate. They do not eat food but metabolise human blood, regenerate in the Earth, and they have a reverence for all things living that vampires do not. They also live a very long time, and their numbers are dwindling because of the male's need to find their lifemate.
Mikhail, and the men of His Kind, are alpha males. They protect their women at all cost, they are arrogant, and have a really bad habit of ordering people about rather than asking.
Raven is human but she has an extraordinary psychic/sensitive ability that has helped her track down serial killers. She has not done this for too long because it takes a great deal out of her encountering such evil as there is in a serial killer.
Raven and Mikhail are brought together on the horizon of war that will involve human hunters, vampires, and the Carpathians.
There is sex in the book, but they are quite good, well-written scenes. To make love to a Carpathian is over-the-top, but Feehan embraces the incredulity of the imagination and weaves you into the sex scene with true expertise.
My one annoyance with the story came with Raven. She is such a strong character, but there were points where I thought she was being obtuse to the point that it was painful. She needed to be slapped. It took her an awful long, damned time to figure out that Mikhail was not about to have a one-night stand with her, and let her go.
I love Ms. Feehan's way of telling a story and building the Carpathian world. The plot is solid, the story is full of action and adventure, with lots of humorous interaction between Mikhail and Raven, and the other characters as well. Even the villains are well drawn. Her editing and proofreading teams are excellent.
If you love good, well written love stories with interesting characters - good, decent men and women, and really evil villains, this is good book and series for you. Ms. Feehan also has some other good series, too, that you might want to check out.

There are creatures there are more than vampire.
It's seems an interesting story, but I had problems to get connected with the characters.
Mikhail and Raven two characters find each other. Emotional, I felt jumbled. Description wise not much, I hope for more information and description about history and the surroundings in this area, but nothing it would have lifted the storyline a bit.
The storyline development is very slow, and I struggled to believe that a woman can follow so fast a total stranger. Raven seemed to be a strong character, but she lose her free will. Mikhail is demanding, arrogant and knows no bounds.
I would have loved more involvement with the people in the village it was not enough. The action is written well, but that's all. I liked Griorgi good character. Overall the story lacks on something, I don't think I will getting the second one for this price, to high.

*Spoiler*
I think that if Mikhail wouldn’t have told Raven about the whole lifemate thing and it was more of a slow burn and a little less obsessive, possessive, toxic love then I would have enjoyed that side of it a lot more and would definitely buy the next in the series because I cared about the characters. Once you get over that though and I just pretend in my head that the time line is months rather than what seems like a week then I enjoyed it much more.

I found it really hard to complete Dark Prince and honestly it’s not my favourite in the series BUT I do absolutely adore Mikhail and Raven in future books

Now I'm a fair bit older, I found the writing rather "flowery" & over discriptive. I also skip past all the sex scenes because it's a variation on a continuing theme.
Very popular books & loads of them, so this is just my older opinion. As I said, I did enjoy them the first time round.
