Opiniones editoriales

A Work of a True Genius...right down to the artwork!
How do you improve on an existing masterpiece? If you're Roger Waters you don't...you simply create a new one. As someone who's enjoyed the music of Roger Waters and Pink Floyd over the years, I pre-ordered the album confident that I would get past any initial reservations I might have had with the first few songs I heard. And that's exactly what happened. Hearing Roger speak words over what were once guitar solos and musical bridges takes a bit of getting used to but after multiple listens it's completely transformative and you begin to appreciate the subtle nuances and the juggernaut of Roger's powerful words. Despite the minimal arrangements this is not an easy album to make. It's just as powerful, unique and original. Full credit to Roger for taking his musical ideas and lyrics to a different level. This album could have easily been recorded using the same style used on the lockdown sessions (which incidentally I loved!!) but Roger, being the musical pioneer and craftsman that he is, took it to a new direction. Initially the "spoken word" passages and mid-song interludes may seem out of place, but they eventually hit their mark, especially the incorporation of the lyrical passage from Free Four into the Intro. With excellent production values and songs that transition seamlessly, it's a truly satisfying musical experience listening to this album on CD. A work of a true genius! While I love this album, I respect and appreciate that others might not; we all have our own tastes. At the same time, I'd much rather be in a position to enjoy it than to use words like: "I'm a true Pink Floyd fan, BUT..." or "I like Roger's this and that, BUT..." Without straying too far from this review, I get that Roger can be a polarizing figure to some; however, he's incredibly smart and knows things and sees things that many might not. I applaud him for taking a bold stance in whatever cause he chooses to engage in. I truly respect artists who tell it like it is and are not afraid to speak up for something they believe in. And with Roger, artists such as The Chicks, Bruce Springsteen, John Mellencamp, U2 and Bruce Cockburn come to mind. Speaking of Bruce Cockburn, if you're not familiar with his music, check out "Call it Democracy". The most powerful political song I've ever heard, if a Pulitzer Prize could be awarded for a song's lyrics this would be it. Anyhow, I will say that I'm just as much a fan of Roger as I am of Dave, Richard and Nick and appreciate their collective and individual efforts. And for me, Roger's Redux is an effort fully deserving of five stars!

Fabulous album, it really pulls you in

When I first listened to this, I didn't much care for it. I felt it was Roger's claim to really being the sole author and giving a middle finger to David and the rest of the band. (RIP Rick.) I had to divorce myself from this feeling in large part, and then give it a few more listens. If you look at it as a statement on aging [of Roger and the album], it becomes more palatable, though there are still parts I am nonplussed by. I think starting the album with Free Four as its Speak To Me works well. The instruments- especially the guitar- have been minimalized except the bass, percussion and some keyboards, and more of the vocals are now in Roger's spoken voice. On the Run is now apocalyptic. Great Gig is now based on the story of a friend dying of cancer, and subsequent sale of his place. It is not gruesome but is devoid of singing. There is even the shuffling of a song's order, but most of the album's lyrics are otherwise unchanged. It does speak to the aging of the band and album. If this was the album that came out in '73, Pink Floyd would not be the legend it is today, but that was 50 years ago, and I do not believe this album was meant to replace it. As I said, the album has grown on me and I suspect given the chance, it will on you too. You do have to get by Roger's bitterness and the middle finger and give it a few spins.

Stream this album before deciding on a purchase. As for me, one listen lasts a lifetime.

I was hoping this would be a serious re-recording that is faithful to the original source material, but with Waters' darker signature style... as if you saw him do these songs live in concert. Personality, DSotM Redux sounds like an unfunny parody to me. You know that outraged, sinking feeling you experience upon hearing your favorite song (or album) redone in a terrible cover fashion or even worse as a soulless, stripped-down elevator music instrumental? Yeah.

So, what is Dark Side of the Moon Redux? A 50th anniversary cash grab? Another egotistical jab from Mr. "I am Pink Floyd" Waters to David Gilmour and Nick Mason to display his creative authority over one of the most beloved rock albums of the 20th century? Roger Waters’ attempt to make music in the vein of Jim Morrison's poetic "An American Prayer", but without all the Lizard King's mojo? In my opinion, the very best aspect of Redux is the cover photography of the dog's eye. I'll stick with "The Wall", "The Final Cut", and "The Pros and Cons of Hitch Hiking" when I want to listen to Roger Waters at his dominant best.

5.0 de 5 estrellas Why Not?
Calificado en Reino Unido el 9 de octubre de 2023
I’m 58, so the original DSOTM was released when I turned 8! It’s been my favourite album ever since. I’m a big fan of Roger, followed his solo career ardently since the acrimonious split in ‘85. Always thought Floyd needed a Roger to guide them in the right direction, all excellent musicians with a common goal to succeed. Roger came up with the themes of Dark Side and wrote all the lyrics himself so why is it such a big deal that he readdresses his thoughts as a 29 year old with the wizened experienced mind from the intervening 50 years?

We’re not being asked to compare the two, it’s not meant to be a replacement, just a reimagined version for today’s older ears! I can still listen to the original in all it’s glory and bask in the effortless beauty of the Floyd in their prime and still love it!

Roger has stripped and slowed the original down and recorded it with an 80 year old’s perspective and added extra spoken parts to the instrumentals to get the point of the whole piece across to the listener. Yes he’s omitted the guitar solos but has added strings, Hammond organ and softly sung backing vocals to accompany his raspy Leonard Cohen style of delivery along with Joey Waronker’s drums and percussion.

Ex member of The Black Keys Gus Seyffert plays a large role with the finished product playing bass, guitar, keyboards, synth, percussion and backing vocals and produced the album as well, so pretty much his baby!

I can’t understand the outpouring of grief and anger that he has the effrontery to revisit a past work of his and readdress the themes prevalent at the time to bring it bang up to date 50 years later. Why not? Most of the naysayers are probably livid with his stance on various political issues and see it as a chance to have a dig at him! He doesn’t care, save your breath! The fact that Nick Mason has called it brilliant is good enough for me.

I personally love what he’s done with it and found it quite emotional in places, where you can taste the bitterness of old age and feel the dying light of youthful exuberance from a life fully lived. I will enjoy both versions for the rest of my life! Cheers Rog! 👍😀

    The Final Cut
