Seven years after her last album, Enya (finally) returns with "Dark Sky Island". For those who don't know, Enya is in fact a creative trio consisting of Enya herself (Eithne Ní Bhraonáin) who writes the melodies, plays all the instruments you hear and performs all the vocals herself, Nicky Ryan (who produces and oversees the recording of the music) and Roma Ryan (who writes the lyrics).

The album opens with "The Humming", a song about the fact that nothing in life is certain and change is the only thing we can be sure of. It's a song about letting go, accepting the way things are, and seeing things from a higher perspective. It's dark, haunting, and euphorically comforting at the same time; the perfect way to open an Enya album..The album has a nice mix of her more upbeat (well, as upbeat as Enya gets) trademark lush and layered vocal tracks, as well as her ballads with more stripped down vocals. The title track "Dark Sky Island" manages to combine the two by opening as a stripped down ballad, but the last two minutes just swell up with increasing layers of vocals and the effect is very powerful. It marks a point in the album where the songs start going in a more powerful, and slightly surprising, direction.

"The Loxian Gate" makes me imagine Daenerys Targaryen, on the back of a dragon, flying towards Westeros where she will undoubtedly defeat her enemies (only Game of Thrones fans will know what I'm what I'm talking about here). This song is the perfect example of how Enya's music has a flair for escapism but is still so emotionally charged.

Enya has put out another Enya album. Celebrate, rejoice, and enjoy.

The pedantic reviews really annoy me since they seem to miss the entire point. Would that Bach had lived longer to create 100 more preludes and fugues, partitas, concertos. Yes, Enya sounds like Enya, but only if you are deaf.

Do NOT listen song by song and critique each one. Enya has created an album here, in the old sense of an integrated musical experience with a beginning, middle and an end. Put the music on, and then go about your creative work, and you will find by the 4th or 5th time through you will have grown to love it, to crave it, to want to live in it. Enya creates a world that you can only appreciate by inhabiting it. This album has a beautiful, unique, consistent musical and emotional vision. I love it!

I have always used Enya within my own writing and creative processes. This album has her trademark "enyaisms," and this album brings you through an emotional journey which transcends this world.

We start with the journey, "And on the road are you and me" (The Humming). We experience some separation "Let me give this dream to you each night and ever more...and all those years you guided me so I could find my way." (So I Could Find My Way). Even a little break up, "Wonder why this love is over (Even In The Shadows). And just like life, we rebound. "Everything flows. Here comes another new day." (Echoes In Rain). The journey continues and just like a book/movie, I leave you to your journey.

Enya always has a way to create soothing sounds to counter the harsh world we live in. Take this lyrical and musical journey with your emotions. At the end of this journey on the Deluxe Version, Enya leaves us with bonus tracks that remind us that "I always remember your smile.
Each one has a journey, that's how it goes. Some times we're together, some times alone."

You retreat in a secure place where everything you expect is just the way they are. Surprises are sometimes pleasant but I still prefer the comfort of familiar. This is what Enya's Dark Sky Island is all about. You hear what your expect from her -- simple tunes in complex vocal reverb. You feel what you want to feel when you chose to play her music -- serene and soothing. The Enya triumvirate delivers another potent album that calms, an album that needs to be listened from the first track to the last. They have perfected their sound and they are very consistent from one album to another. If you like Enya, buy this album. Every song is a gem, and no lemons.

This morning I quieted my soul while listening to Dark Sky Island. The music opens my heart to the wonder of creation and provokes a simple thankfulness within. "Echoes in Rain" sounds like a psalm of praise for the glory of each new day. The sweet melody of "Pale Blue Grass" delights and oddly enough reminds me of Brian Wilson. "Sancta Maria" lifts me up in the mystery of grace. From my initial listen, I am deeply moved and enriched by the sense of praise echoing throughout this album.

After many years, Enya is back. Some albums are stronger than others, and this one really is what I hoped to hear from her. If you like a keltic "dark" sound, not to cheerful not to light, hearted, with a pace given by a drum this album really delivers. If you like Enya, do not hesitate, I think this album is way better than "And winter came."
