About the Author
KIM spent years researching and writing IN THE DARK OF THE SUN, while logging time on location. She is currently at work with Mykel on the next Jake Tyler novel. In addition to writing, she is also an accomplished photographer and designer, specializing in web development. With over 20 years of military experience, Hawke has made a career of doing the unthinkable, from fighting rebels and training UN peacekeepers in war-torn Africa to running a war clinic on the front lines and establishing a combat medic school in Azerbaijan, to doing combat search and rescue during the height of Colombia's drug war.

The story has a love interest but is mostly intrigue with constant twists and turns. The author gives you hints setting you up for future action. You wonder how and when and where it all will play out.
I am not a typical fan of thrillers although I do occasionally watch them on TV and got hooked on the "24" series--but my usual genre is more Downton Abbey. Seriously. Also, I am female, so military themes just aren't my thing but a friend recommended this book, so I took a chance. Am I glad I did! I can honestly say I was hooked on page 1 and could not put it down.
The book is, above all, a high-octane thriller, but it has everything any reader could possibly want: romance, drama, intrigue, suspense, action, and even comedy. The exotic locations are so exquisitely framed they practically drip off the pages.
The story is set against the Drug War in South America so I was a bit dubious about its relevance since most of what I've heard of that came circa the Clinton era. Then surprisingly just a few weeks ago, 60 Minutes had a story of the take down of a Colombian mega cartel that occurred within the past few years. In any case, the book is so well written and entertaining that it wouldn't have mattered to me when or where the action took place. Definitely on board for the next in the Jake Tyler series!
To quote one of the beloved , at-first innocent , characters in the book as he is drawn into the fray , " I feel like Jack bloody Bauer ! " . It will take longer than 24 hours for this tale to spin out but it is worth the time .
I hope Martin / Hawke are working on a sequel .
I could not stop reading this book. It is so well written and the story is amazing, well thought out to the last detail. When I finished I just turned back to page one and started reading it all over again, it is that good.
This being the first book in the series, Martin creates a believable back story for each character and builds on them throughout the entire book. I actually felt that I knew each character, and was there living the adventure with them.
This book will not only get your adrenalin flowing, but it will also make you laugh and at times cry. I highly recommend it to ANYONE, even if action adventure is not your normal read, there is something for everybody in this book.
Kudos to Martin and Hawke.
Such an exciting book, for both men & women. It's packed with action, suspense, it makes you travel through Costa Rica, the Colombian jungle, it is so well written that you are literally transported to these places and you feel like you are actually living it! The story is full of unexpected developments, I stayed up late several nights just because I couldn't put it down, "one more chapter", "one more chapter!" I kept saying to myself
I finished the book in the plane and my neighbor started reading it. After the first chapter, he was hooked too!
So, yes, take this book on vacation with you, or read it at home with a good cup of coffee, you'll have a great time!
and is very well researched so that it is an excellent depiction and description
on the jungle fighting in the Colombian war on drugs.
I was a Clancy fan in the late '80s and '90s for the adventure, and just got back into reading again and this book falls into the excitement/adventure category for keeping your interest and on the edge of your seat. As time allowed, I moved through this book very quickly!!!
