As other reviewer's have stated the daughter is a mess, even understanding why she acted the way she did, still made it hard to enjoy the story. The daughter did grow on me near the end, so not all was lost.
The romance is slow in coming, and when they have sex, I felt it was more of getting rid of their lusts, than making love.
The story is very unique, and I wish the author would have explained about the illness at the end of the story. If there is a cure in the 21st Century, would have been an interesting piece to include.
The book is selling for $3.99 and I it isn't worth that. I paid $.99 and am pleased with what I read for the amount I paid.
We do get HEA, no cliffhanger, somewhat descriptive sex. This is book one in a series, and it stands alone. (ljb)
Violet the governess was every bit a heroine in her life. Alistair made a formidable tragic hero. Lillian the daughter with the mysterious malady and horrible, spoiled temper provided strong focus to the busy plot. Placed throughout were some fine and somewhat unexpected and expected twists to the story managing not to be too predictable or too unbelievable. Any nitpicking I did in my head regarding any of the story simply came from my own opinion and did nothing to mess with the book for me. Good pacing, good writing, good read.
FYI, there are a few sex scenes as well as a scene in which an older man is found trying to rape a young girl. The rape scene is the reason the heroine finds herself running far from home looking for sanctuary in the home of the hermit and his daughter. It is written in a tasteful way, but some may be uncomfortable reading about it.
I enjoyed reading the Gothic-style book and look forward to reading more by this author.
All I can tell you is it is a "MUST-READ". You definitely won't regretit
