I've been unsure of the Dark Tower series for a while. I've never been a big fan of King's other works and was hesitant to really get into his most complex and epic work. I was wrong. This is great literature, forget science fiction or fantasy, at its best.

The Gunslinger is in many ways the perfect introduction to a long serial epic such as The Dark Tower. It's not too long and does a great job of defining both the main character of the series as well as his ultimate goal. Motivation, friends and enemies can all be fleshed out later. The length is great because, if you turn out not to be a fan, you haven't invested yourself in a massive work (I'm thinking of friends who sloughed through Dune only to find it wasn't their cup of tea).

If you've never read a Stephen King book before, don't take this as an indication of his other work. It's different, but in a very good way.

It was a good start to a series but overall as a novel to itself felt lacking. Great poetic prose but I could have used more human drama/character develop into some back stories that I'm sure will come up in futures books.

I've never read Stephen King prior to picking up "The Gunslinger" two weeks ago. So far I'm enjoying a somewhat surreal, but fun ride through mid-world. This volume has several emotional ups and downs and each character comes to life. The relationship between Roland and his ka-tet is one that grows and evolves in the best tradition of the fantasy party. Highly recommended.

I'm still not done with this book, but I'm working on it. I feel like it's dragging, but it's a pretty good story. It's also incredibly long, if you don't know... so... it's not my favorite book, but it's some of King's best work and therefore worth a read. I say that as a person that isn't really a fan of King's writing... stories, yes, but I don't care for his writing style, usually. I would still recommend this book.

The Dark Towers series is my second attempt at Stephen King. This second time around is a dead ringer. The best word to describe Wastelands would be fascinating. The book grabs you at the beginning and leaves you wanting more at the end. I should note that book IV is, by contrast, a huge disappointment. I stopped reading the series after book four. Read the first three and be grateful for the experience.

If you've read books 1 and 2 You get the general gist of the series. I don't much care for Stephen King's writing style and cheesy characterizations. Still the concept is very intriguing and I hope the rest of the series answers all the questions asked along the way. Of the three books so far I like book 2 the most.

I'd tried to read this book several times and gave it up. Then I read that Stephen King was writing with the Good, the Bad and the Ugly in Mind! From that point the Gunslinger was Clint Eastwood, the man in black was Lee Van Kleef and so on. It was great. Clint is still going strong in book 5. Van Kleef? Not so much.

Book is excellent. I just have a suggestion about the kindle sample. For this book, the kindle sample only included only the Introduction and Foreward by Mr. King, which as a long time fan was excellent but would not be so helpful for first time reader. I suggest starting the sample after the introduction or extending the sample to include at least a few pages of chapter one. Thank you!

Loved it when I was a teenager, loved going back and reading it after many years. GREAT series. The end of the last book sucks ass, but it's still worth reading the rest just for the imagery. Its like science fiction, fantasy, and a western all rolled into one. Ties in so many of his other books, including Eye of the Dragon and other world from The Talisman.

I loved the book! It was great...if I had known I would have to wait years for more to come...well I did get frusrtated but they were worth waiting for...except the final pages where he reveales what the black tower is etc...I was so frustrated I threw the book across the room!!!! Then I picked it up and read what Stephen had to say to his "Constant Readers" about the end...I felt somewhat better...I never knew authors didn't always know themselves what the ending was going to be until they got there!! I loved every book in the long awaited series.
