In the jungles of Ecuador, blood taints the waters. A multinational conglomerate's unholy alliance with a bloodthirsty military regime has resulted in a massacre. Only the rebel Francisco Franco (Forest Whitaker, Repo Men) and his determined wife Mia (Eva Longoria, TV's "Desperate Housewives") can prove the truth. To settle a personal debt, former CIA agent Jack Begosian (Andy Garcia, Ocean's 13) takes on the freelance assignment to rescue Francisco and risks everything in a brutal battle to expose the cover-up.

The film deals with the age old conflict of control of natural resources. In this case an international company called Clear-Bec runs water filtration systems. It makes deals with governments to take over the waterways used by the poor indigenous population, then turn around and sell them what has been free. Old progressives are familiar with this type of thing from Susan George's "How the Other Half Dies" (1976).

In this particular case, the water in an Ecuadorian village becomes polluted with sewage and leads to a typhus epidemic which wipes out a village. Part of the damage control was to have the military ensure there were no witnesses. The incident is brought to the attention of Morgan Swinton (Deborah Kara Unger) part owner of the evil corporation. She has a conscience and wants to get to the bottom of the incident against the wishes of her brother and the rest of the company.

She hires radio talk show host and former CIA agent Jack Begosian (Andy Garcia) who used to work on the other side of these types of issues. For him it is a chance for redemption and to bury those demons. His goal is to bring back the only witness, an activist who has the secret files of what happened, Francisco Francis (Forest Whitaker).

The film is about a fictional corporation doing things that are not beyond the realm of reason, until they bring the fight home, then I had to scratch my head. Personally I would have liked to seen a dramatization of a certain soft drink company who we all know and love and their involvement with the assassination of union leaders in Columbia.

Andy Garcia and Forest Whitaker are typically animated characters in stories. In this movie they are rather subdued and defined more by their philosophical ramblings than actions.

This is not a bad movie. It's very watchable, decent amount of action spread throughout the movie, plot is kind of meh but serviceable. Acting and pace was altogether good.

Typical B action/drama where the bad guys are really bad and the good guys are not so good but altogether it works for the purposes of the story. 4.25 stars because of some pretty large plot holes and some glaring loose ends.

This movie wasn't entertainment (which I often look for in movies) it caused me to think. I enjoy action movies and though this one is full of action, it was presented in an unusual way, thoughtful, bordering on documentary style and then boom ~ it hit me in my heart.

"Dark Truth" is one of those movies that makes you pause and consider what is really going in the world and how much we as Americans take for granted. This movie reflects just how far some people will go to make a dollar. Corporate America at its greedy worst!!!

ANDY GARCIA, IN A MOVIE VERY MUCH LIKE THE CIA MOVIES WE'VE SEEN BEFORE, SHINES IN THIS ONE AS A MAN OF CONSCIENCE WHO MUST CORRECT A SITUATION HE HIMSELF CREATED BASED ON MISINFORMATION. ALSO,SHOWING GARCIA AS A TALK SHOW HOST ENABLES US TO SEE THE MAN STATING HIS OWN LIMITATIONS, AND HIS OWN IMPLIED FAILURES. RQ

This is NOT my type of movie at all but I am giving 4 stars because it is the kind of story that need to be told and the actors all do an excellent job. Andy Garcia and Forest Whitaker go all out to tell this story the way it needs to be told. What happens when the terror of a third world country ends up in your city. And not wanting to leave the women out, you also get Kim Coates, Deborah Kara Unger and Eva Longoria. So here are two good reasons to make sure you see this movie: it tells a story about a problem that affects us all and two, the actors do an excellent job.

I thoroughly enjoyed this movie. The star's bland job and family background morphed into an action adventure genre set in an exotic locale. I love Forrest Whitaker as an actor who plays his roles so well that sometimes I loved his character and sometimes I hate him.
Eva Longoria was underutilized in the movie. She started off as a tough heroine spraying machine gun bullets all around and then faded into the background for the rest of the movie.

I thought this film to be very watable especially as a rental from home. The story is very relevant in our current times (see Frontline's true and disturbing report on Firestone's tire business bed relationship with a previous African despot). The cast is top notch with Andy Garcia, Forest Whitaker, Steven Bauer (Scarface), Deborahh Kara Unger (David Finch's "The Game"), Kim Coates (Sons of Anarchy) and Eva Longoria.

There's something about the execution of the film that makes it play more as a TV movie of the week. The scenes of the massacre where clivians are gunned down in mass looked like what it was, staged. In this day of realism filming that's a blessing or a curse depending upon one's stomach for such things. Many people will say good enough, I get the point. A gun battle in the street looked to be shot and edited through lack of experience or skill in filming such scenes.

If you love your movies and TV shows and your queue is empty, A Dark Truth will pass the time just fine. Conceptually, this movie is very accurate in terms of what is happening in our world as big business looks for supplying their "wares" on the cheap through impoverished countries around the globe. I just don't think this film had the budget to deliver that message skillfully. If your watching queue is already overflowing, keep on your list and get back to this one when your time will allow. By then, you can enjoy what this film does well and its good intentions (That amazing cast too) and over look the budgetary constraints.
