A Darker Shade of Blood, (the Danny Ryle Mysteries Book 2) takes place on Long Island, New York. As I spent a couple of decades of my life there, I have to admit it was fun picturing all the places mentioned throughout the book. And beyond that, it’s good reading. The characters are a collection of typical Long Islanders (hired killers, cops, blackmailers)...ok it’s a stereotype but it is Long Island we’re talking! Our main protagonist, Danny, is trying to do the right thing in a less than savory world.
I love the humor in the book; cops and robbers type books often take themselves too seriously.
When Danny goes into a diner to meet a friend, he describes the waitress: “The waitress, a tall blonde with a beehive hairdo that added several inches to her height, led us to a table. She looked as interested in helping us as I used to look in school.”
A very enjoyable book!

The book, A Darker Shade of Blood is a murder mystery by Lawrence Epstein. Danny Ryle is a political “fixer”, and is on a mission to solve the murder of a woman who had threatened blackmailing his boss, newly elected Congressman, Ken Lucey. The alleged murder is at his boss’ home, and everything points to the Congressman having committed the deed, nothing short of a political scandal and Lucey’s end of career before it is started. To complicate the matter, Lucey’s wife, Katie, confesses that she did it, the guessed motivation for her confession being that she did it for the family, not wanting to see her husband destroyed. But there is no apparent motivation for Katie to murder the woman, and Danny is skeptical about her confession. But the woman has a much craftier plan involving revoking her confession, and opening up her husband to the police.
The only connection is that Lucey had bought the woman’s baby to save his marriage. While all the fuss was on the house, Danny discovers that the woman had blackmailed other men who had had sex with her. He follows that lead.
Danny is a ‘good man’, among his good deeds was rescuing an abducted girl from her father, and protecting mother and daughter. His main team includes ex-Israeli Defense Force, Ari; and Betsy, a former cop. But he also has a list of contacts, most having a touch of illegality, including his father who is a retired hit- man; all are keen to lend a view or make a contact or to give advice to Danny. Danny uses his father’s killer mentality to help solve the mystery. And when all is said and done, Danny’s father removes the final complication for him.
This story and the characters were engaging, especially Ari. As I read on, I found myself asking – what will happen next? Long into the situation, and following many twists and turns, Danny still has no answers on Lucey’s fate for Lucey’s mother who hired him. But she recognizes him as someone who “needed to make a wrong world right again.” Danny walks away sad, comparing himself to the Greek Sisyphus – only solving another murder would get him out of his funk.

This murder mystery provides for a captivating read of a political scandal set in Long Island. Despite not having read any of Epstein works, the book makes him an instant hit in my list of favorite authors thanks to the intriguing plot with which he narrates the mystery tale. Epstein creates memorable characters and witty dialogue from both antagonist and protagonist characters.
The sequence is believable with the purposeful description of events and characters that bring out a holistic picture and carefully connected plot. Character development from typical Long Islanders makes for relatable characters and the author dishes out a great amount of humor to keep the story moving. Epstein keeps a consistent snappy dialogue that gives consistency to the series.

Almost immediately I was drawn into this murder mystery set on Long Island. Danny Ryle, a political “fixer”, embarks on a journey to solve the murder of a woman who was about to blackmail his boss, a Congressman-elect. A political scandal waiting to happen, his boss paid a woman for her baby to save his failing marriage. But when the mother of the child shows up to threaten the Congressman, she’s killed. What happened? Who’s responsible? Ryle seeks to find out in this thrilling mystery.
Author Lawrence J. Epstein is a wonderful writer. I have not read any of his works before, but this will change in the future. He concocts an intriguing plot full of memorable characters, both protagonist and antagonist, witty dialogue, believable sequences, and concise but purposeful descriptions. I feel as if I’m right in the middle of the action, something very few authors manage to achieve.
If you’re looking for a mystery novel full of all the makings of a classic, you’ll want to check this out!

A Darker Shade of Blood is the second installment in the Danny Ryle Mysteries. This was actually my first read of the series and I was able to read it without missing the first one, it stands perfectly as a standalone book. Nevertheless, I already purchased the first one (that's how good I found it).
Epstein delivers an engaging book and we can really tell he has his own experiences in this kind of world. Not only that, his background as an English teacher really shows and the book is really well written. The story offers a great flow, keeping a strong pace throughout all the chapters. The dialogues are witty, fun and believable and the characters, although a bit stereotypical, are anything but flat. Multidimensional, strong, different layers and motivations, the characters provide an important insight into the complicated world of political intrigue. This book was a great surprise and I highly recommend it for anyone interested in mysteries, political intrigue, crime stories but written in a lighter tone than what you can usually find in this genre.

Secrets and politics

The start of this book reels you in and before you know it you've read the whole thing within a day. A darker shade of blood is a fast-paced mystery in which Danny Ryle is issued with another murder case which happens to be a young girl who was planning on blackmailing Danny Ryle’s boss. You are immediately dragged into secrets, scandals, and the general filth of politics. Author, Lawrence Epstein is a highly talented writer, and throughout the entire book, he manages to maintain the wit of the characters. In the past, I have noticed that some authors lose the humour as the book deepens but not in this case. Epstein manages to get the balance just right between serious and fun.
