Editorial Reviews

Review

"An exhilarating read." —Library Journal

"CeCe's attempts to preserve her mother's reputation keep the story's emotional stakes high." —Publishers Weekly

"Readers’ hearts won’t stop racing as they make their way through this suspenseful novel, whether the palpitations are caused by a tense scene, a juicy breakthrough in the plot or a bit of dreamy romance. There are no unnecessary details to bog down the plot; every character, event and beautifully written description keeps the story going at a steady pace, and readers never feel as if they’re being led to a dead end. Dunn’s heartbreaking novel might show a sickening side of humankind, but the end result is a hopefully and moving narrative that will stick with readers." —RT Book Reviews, 4.5 Stars Top Pick

"Dunn manages to take what sounds like another un-of-the-mill teacher-student relationship story and turn it into a dark conspiracy. Mystery fans will race through the pages to find out what really happened the night Tabitha Brooks died. Recommend for fans of other “who do we trust” mysteries, such as the works of Michele Jaffee, Natalie Richards, and Hannah Jayne." —Booklist

"This one will tug your heart and leave you breathless!" —Natalie D. Richards, author of  Six Months Later

"Equally heartbreaking and heroic, CeCe is a character you'll root for. You won't be able to turn the pages fast enough!" —Romily Bernard, author of the FIND ME trilogy

"The Darkest Lie is not only a twisty, fast-paced thriller that kept me guessing to the end, but also the story of a fearless girl struggling to understand the mother she lost, and uncover the secrets around her death that others want to stay hidden." —Shannon Grogan, author of From Where I Watch You

"The Darkest Lie is a headlong rush into the shadows of secrets that should not be kept - and proof that the most dangerous lies of all are the ones we tell ourselves." —Michelle Zink, author of The Prophecy of Sisters

GRADE: B

ONE WORD: Enjoyable

Cecelia just wants to be invisible for her senior year, but when you're targeted by bullies ever since your mom, a teacher, committed suicide after being accused of sleeping with a football player, that's hard to do. Convinced there's more to the story about her mother and with the help of a nerdy-cute new student, Cece sets out to find the truth about her mother's alleged abuse and alleged suicide.

Pintip Dunn drew me into THE DARKEST LIE with Cece's compelling voice and engaging narration on page 1 and I was sorry to see the story end. Cecelia was easy for whom to root, perfectly imperfect. Understandably closed off after the revelation and loss of her mother, she had good reason to mistrust Sam. I loved her relationship with her very-open-minded grandmother, who was a hoot. Both Sam and her hotline supervisor Liam were interesting potential love interests. I wished Mackenzie and Briony's characters had been further explored.

For being such an important component of the story, Dunn could have done better research about the operation of crisis hotlines which wasn't accurate. Some of the clues seemed too forced and convenient. The payoff was mostly satisfying though didn't make complete sense.

I enjoyed reading THE DARKEST LIE and will probably reread at some point.

I was instantly intrigued by the description of Pintip Funn's book, The Darkest Lie. Cecilia's life is in free form after losing her mother. CeCe finds it impossible to believe her best friend, who she did everything with could be the person everyone is now whispering about. When she begins her senior year her suspicions about the truth of her mom's suicide and her her affair with a student lead her to begin trying to uncover what really happens with the help of Sam, a new transfer student and newspaper intern. As they uncover clues, we are along for the ride as a dark and winding mystery is slowly uncovered. I was cropped to this mystery from page one. Dunn has a talent for writing a story filled with not only mystery, but how one attempts to deal with loss and forgiveness. I highly recommend this gripping YA mystery and will be sealing out more of Dunn's work.

I thoroughly enjoyed this multi-layered teen mystery/romance. CeCe Brooks is a believable teen grieving over her mother's bizarre death, made worse by the appearance of betrayal on many levels. While she unravels the multiple mysteries surrounding her mother's demise, she becomes involved with two attractive young men who, in true gothic style, take turns being appealing and potentially dangerous. This fast read is extremely accessible, yet delivers multiple rich themes, many of which are touched on in the discussion questions at the end of the book. I definitely recommend.

Suicide in small town Kansas? Trusted adults having sex with high school teenagers? These are tough topics. But Pintip Dunn handles them courageously and skillfully when she describes the love and anger of a teenage girl grappling with the supposed sex scandal and suicide of her mother / best friend. Dunn writes characters with such depth that you feel things you didn't know were possible, like anger for the people you love the most. She gives words to those confusing feelings. And in those simple, but powerful words, Dunn takes you places you didn't think you wanted to go. But when she leads you out, safely, you can't help but feel changed.

This book was darker than Dunn's first novel, Forget Tomorrow, but it features Dunn's signature clear storytelling, emotional depth, and strong characters. I can't wait to see where Dunn will take me in her next novel.

The Darkest Lie by Pintip Dunn is an engrossing young adult mystery about a teenager’s search for answers about her mother’s apparent suicide.

Six months ago, Cecelia “CeCe” Brooks’ mother, Tabitha, committed suicide following rumors she was sleeping with popular football player Tommy Farrow. Following a short investigation that did little to prove or dispel the allegations, the case is closed as far as the police and CeCe are concerned. With her senior year in front of her, she wants nothing more than fly under the radar and avoid the attention of her fellow classmates. During the first day of school, CeCe catches the eye of new student Sam Davidson when he steps in to help another student who is being bullied by resident mean girl, Mackenzie Myers.

Needing extra credit to pass one of her classes, CeCe ends up volunteering at the crisis center where her mother also worked. When she learns Sam is researching her mother’s suicide for a newspaper article, she reluctantly agrees to work with him and she begins digging into her mom’s cases at the crisis center. After CeCe begins getting threatening phone calls and texts, she is unsure who to trust but she is also unwilling to stop her investigation once she and Sam begin to uncover the horrifying truth.

Lost, confused and certain she did not know her mother at all, CeCe has withdrawn from her friends and keeps to herself. Never really close to her dad, their relationship is incredibly strained due to his intense grief over Tabitha’s death. Angry and hurting, CeCe remains torn about whether or not she truly believes the allegations against her mother.
