The story and characters of "Darkest Night" first came to my attention as one of the darker screenplays I've ever read, and the novel on which that screenplay was based is even darker.
The Mudd family struggles under the boot of Abram Mudd, a patriarchal paranoiac whose delusions of cosmic importance, coupled with a self-serving religion of his own making (a toxic pastiche of an anti-Semitic gentile fanboy's fascination with the Tanakh, a selective New Testament browser's wide-eyed yearning for apocalypse, an emotional adolescent's magical thinking and the universal male illusion that it is his phallus, and not the sun, around which all known life revolves) create an insular familial world in which "the other" (that is to say, almost everyone else) is shunned and feared.
Son Zachary Mudd's growing unease with the family's dystopian dynamic leads to a struggle which, given both the world of the novel and the world-view of the Mudds, seems doomed to despair. And yet we hope...Zachary is the one light shining here, and the reader cannot help but to to cheer him on in his stagger towards liberty, halting and unsure as it is.
Michael Sean Erickson's prosiac prose spares no disturbing metaphor and gets so deep into the damaged mental state of many of the characters in "Darkest Night" that one has to take a break from reading every now and then, just to remind one's self that love is stronger than fear, and that people like Abram Mudd, while they do exist, are the past for our species and not the future. Or so, at least, we hope.
It's a good read for silent winter months, for seasons of barren trees when the urge to surrender to a cold darkness breathes in the icy wind.
(Note: the screenplay for "Darkest Night' is slated for production in 2017.)

... Night is a dark and disturbing story that will delight fans of intense horror
Reviewed in the United States on December 17, 2016
Darkest Night is a dark and disturbing story that will delight fans of intense horror. The novel grabs a hold of you from its very first scene to the last.
The heart of the story is the dark paranoia of a family living on the edge. Convinced that there is a beast about to descend on them, and perhaps wipe out mankind as we know it, the Mudd Family grapples with the question of whether the beast is really out there or in their minds. Most disturbing are the sexual undertones, the subtle hints of past abuse that may or may not have been imagined, and the masks people wear to hide their fears and sorrows even from those they should be able to trust. There are moments of intense horror, but the unrelenting dread that underlies every scene is what most haunted me about this story.
Fundamentally, Darkest Night is a drama about family relationships, societal paranoia, and dark secrets. It has the grisly blood and guts that will satisfy horror fans, but is also a compelling, engaging drama that is interest to all audiences.

This is one twisted story and I loved it. Everything from the main characters to the entire town is creepy and dark. This book is a page turner and will bring you along for an emotional ride. The story is very dark and disgusting at times. The author really pushes the boundaries. If you're a fan of horror, this one is for you.

Darkest Night by Michael S. Erickson is not just ordinary literary prose. Michael's mastery of the english language has allowed him to take us along for a quite an emotional entanglement. Fear, compassion, sexual tension, shame and suspense are just a few emotions in that weave. It is truly difficult to find a good horror/suspense novel worth the read, Darkest Night fills that void. Excellent!

Its truly one Hell of a Thriller! The settings and mood of the story is dark and extremely twisted, which makes it one of the best to read in this genre! It will completely blow you away and will leave you in states of suspense! The descriptions are extremely vivid, making it feel more realistic than other horror novels! An original masterpiece! Definitely best for those whom frequent thrillers! Cant wait to see the film adaptation!

Awesome book! I love it when stories send chills down my spine and this one certainly has! A definite page turner and I didn't realize that the sun went down until I put down this book... yikes. If you're a fan of getting the bejeebers (in a good way of course), then I highly recommend this one!

I absolutely loved this book! Highly recommended! One of the most creative horror books I've ever read. There are parts I definitely can relate to as well. The demons within that I deal with. Awesome job to the author for such an awesome book! 5 Stars!!!!
