I'm a fan of the Lords of the Underworld and finally, it is Cameo's turn to have her own book. Cameo is the keeper of the demon Misery and almost everyone who hears her voice shudders in, wait for it, misery. She has one friend, Viola, Goddess of the Afterlife, who doesn't suffer at the sound of Cameo's voice.
Cameo goes looking for Lazarus the Cruel and Unusual, because friends have told her she has met him twice and she has slivers of memories of him. Seems her demon likes to erase her memories so she isn't sure of anything except wanting to find him.
Lazarus in now King of the Realm of Grimm and Fantica and seems to be unaffected by her voice. And he is definitely attracted to Cameo. This is such a sweet story as the feared Lazarus courts Cameo, and as Cameo's demon tries to keep her too miserable to accept Lazarus' interest in her.

I've read them all and enjoyed them all but the series has faded as the focus has went from 80% action and strategy with 20% love story, to 80% blind horniness and 20% action/strategy...This latest installment was by far the weakest...The first 11 chapters can be summed up in one page...Lazarus sees Cameo, becomes permanently horny to the point that every thing she says, he twists into something sexual...The sun is up, let's screw...You are sweating, let's screw....Your guts were cut out and you're healing, let's screw (this actually happened)....After those awful first eleven chapters, you get a ray of hope the book is going to get on track, but it fails to be consistent, as so much time is spent on Lazarus being horny....This book should have been named "The Darkest Boner" or "I'm Sad, I'm Horny"....30 chapters could have been 10 easily if you just focused on meaningful Lords business...This was The Darkest Disappointment...

I officially have a new book boyfriend and his name is Lazarus!
I purchased this book when it first came out but didn’t get to it right away, then I decided to buy the audiobook. Which is quickly becoming my favorite way to enjoy books. I am ready to listen again, I loved it that much! Max Bellmore was superb.
The Darkest Promise is EVERYTHING! Funny, exciting, passionate, and I didn’t want it to stop. Gena’s wit is unsurpassed!
“Her pain was so strong, so shrill she could almost understand a man’s suffering when he had a cold.”
Yep, that’s in chapter one and I spit coffee when I heard that. This novel made me laugh so much. I didn’t think that was possible, especially considering the story revolved around Cameo, the keeper of sorrow. But laugh I did. I loved every minute of the story and Lazarus is the dream hero, Arrogant, possessive, protective and loyal, and let's not forget alpha to his very core. I LOVED him. He and Cameo were perfect together.
What I can’t wait for now is Viola’s story, I really hope we get that next. Because she is awesome.
I am rating The Darkest Promise 5 Huge Boundless stars, I absolutely loved it.

I have been waiting for Cameo's story for what seems like a long time. As the only female "Lord" I was very curious about her. She always seemed to be pushed to the back by her male counterparts. I was not disappointed by this story. The author did a great job showing not only the strength of this character (she takes a backseat to no other Lord!) but also her weaknesses. Her struggle with her demon is by far more difficult than any other Lord. I'm stopping here as I do not want to give away any spoilers but I want to say this is a great story and I highly recommend this series! I'm looking forward to finding out what happens with Viola and Princess Fluffykins and, of course, William and Gilly. (See Gena...incognito)

I was waiting forever for this book to come out. I know it came out about a year ago, but I'm weird about my series. All the others that I own in this series are paperbacks, so I had to wait another year for the paperback version. When I finally received it in the mail, I jumped right in!
I'm so happy that I had to wait! This story was beautiful and so perfect for Cameo. She is officially my favorite Lord. Lazarus may have become my new book boyfriend in the process.
Cameo is a fierce, badass woman who isn't afraid to stand up for (or with) the man she loves. All she wants is a taste of happiness, and who doesn't? When you are at your weakest most vulnerable moment, you hunger and crave happiness like its a sustenance to keeping you alive, which it very well could be.
And Lazarus honestly reminds me of my husband. He is always making me smile when I'm in a bad mood and he knows how to push me to get me out of my mood. This is exactly what Lazarus does to Cameo.
This is a beautiful story of love and I'm excited to read more about the Lords soon!

The Darkest Promise by Gena Showalter
Lords of the Underworld book 13. Dark paranormal romance. Best read as part of the series.
Cameo is the only female demon in the series. She carries the demon of Misery. If she experiences joy, her memory is erased. She is paired with Lazarus the Cruel.
Lots of crying by guards because of Misery.
Lots of dark actions and between Misery, Lazarus, and situations.
Worth reading if you are invested in the series since these two have been included in previous stories so it’s good they get their tortured, but happy ending.

Cameo holds the demon of Misery inside her. Her words cause people to weep and being around her leads to depression. Searching out Lazarus, she wants to remember the missing memories Misery wiped from her mind.
The book starts out slow as it took me a bit to get into understanding the comments coming from Misery and how they sent Cameo off. But once Cameo and Lazarus connect, the story gets hot and the suspense builds. Each of them have a secret which they are unwilling to share. They don't trust and yet we all know how trust is important in love.
For fans of the series, the original characters are back and we get to see where the battle is heading between Hades and Lucifer. Looks like Ms. Showalter has some more stories to tell!

Cameo’s Story is Imperative... Not the best though...
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on July 1, 2019Verified Purchase
There was nothing wrong with this story. It had a good strong story line, with Cameo (the keeper of misery) and Lazarus (son of Typhon) leading the main narrative. However, I just couldn’t get into it.
Objectively, however I’d say this book should be a must read. Cameo’s development is imperative to the story of the Lords as we discover an essential piece of the puzzle (no spoilers!). We also learn about Will and Gilly (and yet more possessed folk).
The writing is engaging. The romance quite believable. I like Lazarus - he’s a good fit with the Lords, with his dry and sarcastic (if self-depricating) wit. The potential off-shoots/storylines here are endless...
For me though, it just lacked a certain something. After characters like Torin and Strider (and there forceful female counterparts!) as well as the Wicked novel couples, this pair seemed a little bland.

OMG!! Every time I read a lord of the underworld book I think it can't be better than the last but how wrong!! Honestly, hand on heart? This is better than any book I've read!! Ever!! Had me feeling like I was on a rollercoaster ride! ,my heart was racing ten to the dozen through the whole book! I love it! I want my very own Lord! Please! This is a peak.."A change of clothes, a box of condoms with the name Spawn Be Gone, tow canteens of water, a can of caviar, a box of organic crackers, toothpaste, wet wipes, a back scratcher, a small bottle of febreeze, a package of earplugs, A toy version of Rathbone the Only, a pair of binoculars, the cloak of invisibility and this... !! Wow?!? Lol, that had me in stitches! Spawn be gone condoms?!? Honestly this is THE book to take on a desert Island, pne that you can read over and over and never get bored, will always have you panting for more.

Wow! I have to say this has to be one of my favourite lords of the underworld books and I have a few.
I just loved Lazarus he was an amazing character and not just because he is hot and powerful but also because he has a great sense of humour that made me smile and laugh out loud quite a few times.
I also think the author did a splendid job of writing cameos character especially since she is possessed with the demon of misery and I didn't think her story would be as entertaining as the rest but she is a strong and likeable character that I really liked.
I enjoyed their banter and their growing romantic relationship aswell as the multiple battle scenes throughout the story.
This story drew me in straight away and it was a very visual and entertaining read that kept me hooked and wanting to read every single word written.
I loved reading about all the characters from previous books, this story is essential to the whole series so is a must read as you find out alot more about the series and how it will progress and I can't wait to read the next installment.

Fun, but not my favourite
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on February 18, 2020Verified Purchase
I am a big fan of this series, but The Darkest Promise isn't as captivating as the other books. Sure it's fun, and even though the characters are interesting, it seems to be lacking in certain areas.
Lazarus has found his mate, but has too much on his plate to be able to seek her out. As usual fate has other ideas.
Cameo is lumbered with a demon who causes her nothing but misery. To top it all, any good memories are oblilarated.
When Cameo and Lazarus meet again, she is unable to remember him. He tries his best to help her have good memories, but it's easier said than done. He wants to make her his, but will misery allow her to have some happiness?
It's a good paranormal romance which has some laugh out loud moments, and will keep the readers entertained. Not my favourite.

So the only female lord or should I call her lady finally gets her story and boy it does not disappoint!
Cameo is awesome with her sassiness and independence. Not only is she kick ass when it comes to defeating enemies but she shows her demon Misery exactly who's boss! She's one strong independent woman. I love her possessiveness and how protective she is of the ones she cares about. Oh yeah she knows what she wants or should I say who? And she'll make sure everyone knows, be it her enemies or exes who just refuse to let go.
Lazarus is the epitome of HOT! He is just yummy with his quick wit and his soft spot for Cameo which he tries to keep hidden. He's got his own past and his own batch of Misery, but hey this is good. Sort of. This makes him immune to the sound of Misery in Cameo's voice and able to do his damnest to woo her! Trust me when I say his wooing skills are just off the charts, the passion he induces is hot hot hot!
Whilst this wooing goes on there's also the brewing of a war, a certain artifact is being searched for and two little terrors known as Ever and Urban also show themselves. FYI they're the cutest kids ever! Plus someone else has their sights set on a certain goddess known as Viola, but for what I wonder....
