Dr. Charlotte Mills is a pulmonologist who infant son was stolen from her over 10 years ago. This broke her emotionally but during those 10 years she went on to medical school and is one of the top pulmonologist in her field. But socially she lives in the dark and time has done nothing to heal the pain.
Porter Reese is a widowed father of two kids. The oldest suffers from pulmonary disease and he lives in fear that with each attack it may be his last. His life too was thrown into darkness with his wife's death and then constant worry about his son. When Dr. Mills is recommend for his son he will do anything to get an appointment with her and doesn't let being told that she doesn't see children deter him. Problem is his plan goes array when he meets her and recognizes that even though she is functioning in the light she lives in the dark – a place he is very familiar with – and he becomes drawn to her.
As this is a two part series, its left hanging on a huge cliffhanger. Its an emotional ride from beginning to end and you cant help but to fall in love with the characters while also feeling their pain knowing that something huge is coming to derail their hard earned small amount of happiness the two have found with each other.
Book 2 which comes out shortly should be cray cray.. Cant wait..
Charlotte, I just wanted to wrap her in my arms and hug her. I could say I wanted to take her pain away but that just isn't possible. Nothing could heal her heart. Take away the darkness that was her world. Until Porter Reese burnt his way into her world.
I loved how adorably awkward these two were. With dry senses of humor and a world of hurt in their past, they got each other. They accepted and didn't try to change the darkness that lived in their souls. No judgements. No excuses. It was a perfect plan, until it wasn't. Until they wanted the light.
With every page read, every tear shed, every brick Charlotte and Porter tore down, my heart, and theirs began to heal. And then the fragile ground they had built went sliding right out form under them. HOLY MOLY! I thought I had this one pegged but this is Aly Martinez I'm talking about. I should've known to expect the unexpected. I absolutely can not wait to see what is in store for Porter and Charlotte in the finale of this duet! I NEED it...like yesterday!
The story is about 2 people who live in the darkness of deep tragedy. Each is different but because of this connection, they are able to relate to each other in a way others can't. You can feel their need, their angst, their love for each other. All you want for these 2 people is a happy ending. They deserve it. They are both really good people, have good families. She is a pulmonologist, he a restaurant owner with his brother the chef. I will say the ending is predictable because of facts that unfold as the story is told, but it's the getting there that's not. There are some real twists and turns and ups and downs. I was so drawn into the story, it felt so real, that I couldn't wait to finish it. And then the ending. Like I said, I knew it was coming, but my heart was pounding a mile a minute when it finally came.
Do not pass this one up. It was one of the best series I have read in a long time.
SIDE NOTE- These covers are so different than what everyone else is doing right now, that its so refreshing; they are colorful and gorgeous enough to make you instantly 1-click without a thought.
Porter and Charlotte, oh my heart just went out to them. I was so captivated with their story. Life is a sucks sometimes and we just have to stick with it and make the best out of it. It was intensely emotional but it's balanced out by well timed light hearted moments. I could not put it down when I started and I just want more. I'm still stunned and jaw dropped after that final reveal.
The Darkest Sunrise is exceptionally fantastic. Aly Martinez out done herself, she built and weaved this breathtaking story so well. Each layer filled with love, hope, grief and forgiveness. A definite must read! The conclusion of Charlotte and Porter's story is yet unknown so many questions. Will they be able to find their own light? What is next for these two?
