Rosa was the cousin that had impressed me in the "Ruthless Boys of the Zodiac Series" and I had no idea I needed a book for her. But now I know I could never live without it.
First of all, Rosa is underestimated all the time because she's small, beautiful, or younger than these guys. I mean how many of us can say the same. That we are underestimated because we are women.
I'm not going to give details because I need you all to read this book.
Rosa may be in jail with murders and crazy people, but she has got a plan.
And it includes all her potential boyfriends. So let me introduce her boyfriends.
There's Cain, the vampire guard, who has a stick up his butt, but I can't help but love him regardless.
Roary, an old friend who she used to be obssessed with. Also he is Leo's brother(Ruthless Boys of the Zodiac Series)
Sin, an incubus, who is half crazy. But who is badass/hilarious. You don't know if he will kiss or shank you.
And lastly my hott wolf man. Who is from the enemy side. I loveeee their banter. First of alllll, what do you get when two alphas come together. A lot of sexual tension for sure. Also a fight for dominance. Just think of that combo in their relationship. It's just off the charts steamy.
It was soo good that I could not put it down. And even in quarantine. I had to self quarantine from all distractions, to give this worthy book my full attention. Because otherwise...
Anyways.... Rosa. oh rosa. you made me proud to be a woman. why. because you're a badass.
And I love how you come to see Rosa's vulnerabilities, and she's open to the unexpected. She's a dynamic character who you can't but help to love.
If you need a book becasue you wanted to see a smack down of little guys taking out them giants.
If you want smexy scenes. If you wanted love/hate relationships. If you wanted a tiny badass lady. If you wanted to laugh or yell and/or experience emotional feelings in a book. THIS IS THE BOOK.
Get a cup of coffee or wine. Sit your behind and read.
As always thanks Caroline and Susanne for the ARC. IT WAS A PRIVILEGE. Also still messed up over here by the cliffhanger. But what can I say. I still love you guys. Thanks for making me proud.
The reason for the half star off is that I felt like I might be a bit confused in the beginning if I hadn't read at least one of the authors' other series related this world and style of classifying supernaturals- Order/Element and the connection to the zodiac signs. Now, that doesn't mean that the authors don't try to recap/educate readers who may be new to their books, but I think some of that went by a little fast or happened in the rapid-fire of scenes that were moving so tasty and action-packed that it might not have gotten the depth/focus that those points deserved. Now, aside from that, I loved the book, so let's talk about that instead.
Darkmore has so many of the things that I want in my RH books:
-a STRONG FMC who can't just play or keep up with the boys but actually OUTplay and OUTwit them
-men whose voices are varied and stand on their own; there's no danger of getting confused as whose eyes you're looking through no matter how many times the perspective changes
-a plot that keeps moving with no spots where I lagged or was tempted to skip
-creative twists on the super and world
Rosalie is a female alpha with no apologetic instinct. She's undeniably and unregrettably herself which I always find refreshing in the sea of RH books where the leading lady is a damsel. Now, I don't want that to mean that she's coming off as a b***h. We see her getting vulnerable in Darkmore, we see her devotion for her family and the feelings that she hides from her pack, and we see genuine kindnesses and desires that the rest of us have- to be loved, for someone to be proud of us, to succeed, to survive. That, to me, is really important because it's showing that Rosalie isn't just one trope, one facet. So, much applause here, ladies and gentlemen.
The men are all alphas- so, alpha-hole lovers, you are in for the very definition of Why Choose. Rosalie is only interested when faced with an alpha who can match her own strength, so there's no danger of her bringing a beta into her harem.
That being said, there's also this delicious will they/won't they aspect to Rosalie's harem. Each of the men comes with some complications whether from the outside world or of their own making, so we definitely don't have fully concrete, settled relationships in book one. On the bright side, these men are NOT boring, and there's still some steam (because we know that's what the thirsty girls want to know).
We have Roary, Cain (Mason), Sin, and Ethan. Now, out of the three, Roary is definitely the most dependable but also the most infuriating. He's easy to like, but he's also the one creating his own distance from Rosalie, so there are times you'll want to just tug his lion mane and make him see some common sense. But he's also delightfully fun, and he brings out a different side of her because he and Rosalie have a history that she doesn't have with the others. Cain, I think, is one that readers will love to hate though there are some little peeks beneath the surface that I think will win readers over. He's one of the guards, real hardcore, and he's a vamp who loves the hunt. So there's this antagonism between him and Rosalie where sometimes it becomes hard to see what they may really feel about each other in the moment, but really, from the moment Rosalie decided she needed him, Cain was a goner.
Sin and Ethan are two other prisoners, and they're an interesting mix. Ethan is also a pretty stable guy, but there's a starcrossed lovers element (with a lot more blood and anger) because he and Rosalie come from different gangs. So, despite the bond that he feels with Rosalie, there are some bumps from the outside world that leak into their relationship in prison. Finally, Sin: the whole reason that she's at Darkmore. Sin is delicious- I mean, he's an incubus, so that's an inherent need. He's also on the questionable line between sane and a bit crazy, which I'm okay with. It adds a little more...fun to this dark place.
Overall, I really loved Darkmore. I love the way that Peckham & Valenti bring different layers into their supes with taking "creatures" and adding the aspect of one or two powers and bringing in the influence of zodiac/horoscope/fate. They've created something special with this, and I love diving back into that world.
If you've read the Ruthless Boys of the Zodiac series, you'll also be taunted and teased because we hear about some of those characters (two of our narrators are related to two of them), but Peckham & Valenti are very good (or very mean) at giving tiny tastes that we need to not downplay or ignore Rosalie and Roary's connections to the Ruthless Boys without giving away real spoilers for the other series.
Also, it does NOT read like what many of you would consider YA. There is steam, there is blood, and there is a fair amount of daredevil crazy, so don't let that category fool you into clicking away from Darkmore.
If you are not already familiar with the authors and their two other series set in the same universe, know that you can read the spinoff on its own. The universe and world building is amazing but never dumped on you to let you discover it by yourself.
But to be perfectly honest, I definitely love seeing crossover characters dropping hints about the other stories, enough to make me squeal and go into full fangirl mode.
I love the new characters as much as I love the old ones, I love the writing, I love the universe, I love how each plot slowly weaves its web and I love how we are fare too engrossed to notice it before it's too late.
It's official, I can now go blindly when it comes to this writing duo.

A cracking read, i found it a slow starter but as the world and the characters built up and around me I found myself more invested and by about 60% I was fully immersed in the underground world of darkmore !
We are introduced to a plethora of new characters that all have a uniqueness in there own way and with tidbits of info from characters we love like Dante and Leon, it gives the book life which the ladies are so very good at doing !
Damn the cliff hangers.
Rosalie is such a great MC and is becoming one of my favourites. We met Roary in the Ruthless boys of the zodiac series and although I am loving him, I am head over tails for Ethan. Now Sin, until he did that incredibly stupid thing by endangering them all, I do love his character, albeit a bit insane. Cain, I’m on the fence with this hunk, we’ll see how he plays out. Such a great plot, such a cliff hanger ending, cannot wait for book 2!
Rosalie is a badass FMC who has a mission one she will achieve no matter the cost. There are twists and turns that will have you begging and pleading for answers. There are 4 MMC that oooze character but Caroline and Susanne dont limit us to these characters alone, they allow us to be reeled into characters you can cringe at laugh at and want to cuddle with like there your best friend (cough, cough Pudding anyone)
This first book of Darkmore Penitentiary is an amazing addition to the world of Solaria and one I cannot wait to indulge in again and again. These girls make Book Hangovers the real deal, theres no coming back once you indulge but you will regret it if you dont.
Zodiac academy and Dark Fae are 2 of my faves!!!
Love that all the characters personalities are so different and varied, the set up is fantastic, the story is well developed and totally engulfs you.
Ahh the guys love them and want to punch them in the unmentionables at the same time.
Rosalie is a kick ass takes no prisoners (see what I did there) kind of a girl love her.
As always they are the queens of cliffhangers and I am now in desperate need of the next book...
The men in the book are another bunch of interesting characters and I must say I liked Ethan a bit more then the others.
The ending was WOW...can’t wait for the next book.
Thank you both for your amazing writing.
The books are worth every penny as the length of them keeps you entertained for hours.
I have not put this book down since I started reading and my eyes feel like they going to drop out of my head!
This is the first prison setting book that I have read and I absolutely loved this first instalment to the Darkmore series. Rosalie is by far one of my favourite characters in the whole of Solaria!!! She is strong, confident, calculated and is full of smart ass comments that had me laughing out loud.
It had great introductions to the four main male characters and I’m looking forward to learning more about them as the series progresses.
I can’t get my hands on Susanne and Caroline’s work fast enough!! They are my favourite authors and I always find it hard to get into anything else after reading one of their books. The worlds that they create are just beautiful written and full of everything you need to keep you intrigued.
Do yourself a favour and dive into the world of Solaria!
You won’t regret it
i liked the strong female MC and the personalities of the 3 out of 4 guys. 1 was annoying
I liked that it was set in a prison and seeing her fight for survival and being Alpha !!
