From School Library Journal
Gr 9 Up—Aidan tries to use his newfound powers to rescue his sister Ava, who is trapped beyond the Veil, as well as kill the assorted demons and wraiths he comes into contact with as part of his job with L.A. Paranormal. Madly in love with Kara, who awakened the unknown powers within him, Aidan is also helplessly drawn to his destined soulmate Rebecca, who can read his emotions. The audiobook is divided into chapters narrated by either Aidan or Rebecca. Will Damron performs the role of the tormented Aidan and captures the intensity and angst that swallows the character. Kate Rudd capably performs the role of Rebecca, the teenager torn among shopping with her friends, her unrequited love for Aidan, and her confusion at how she fits into this new world. Occasional humor lightens the pervasive dark mood of the audiobook. VERDICT Much of this sequel is built on what happened in the previous book, so it is a better purchase for those who already have Darkness Brutal on their shelves.—Julie Paladino, formerly at East Chapel Hill High School, NC
