All the hate I see surrounding this game seems to be exclusively concentrated on it's length. I have to say, it was quite short. It was also good enough to drive me to play through the whole thing again right after. The story, while only having a few predictable moments, did still manage to surprise the hell out of me at times. It was very interesting how it stylistically (gameplay wise) started out like Starbreeze's interpretation of The Darkness IP and transformed into something else. For those of you who wanted an accurate representation of the comic's tone in the first game and missed it, this is for you. It's also relieving to see a good old fashioned gib-fest shooter in the midst of all these "shoot em and watch em flop over" farces. An uzi in this game could blow a limb off. It's unrealistic and I love it.

There are the glaring issue of linearity. It is quite inexcusable, even for a narrative driven title like this. If it weren't for the Darkness powers, this would have killed the game for me. The powers give the player an unparalleled control over the battlefield, though it's still possible to be overpowered *on the hardest difficulty*. On any setting lower than "Don" the game is piss easy. Wasn't an issue for me, however, as I played exclusively on Don. I recommend everyone else do the same unless they're really new to shooters. But... yeah. The powers. They're good. It takes a bit of "exercising" to get used to manage four limbs at once instead of the usual one in a shooter, but when you do it's really satisfying. Most of the powers from the first game are back, including the creeping dark (where you control a darkling instead of one of your snakes). What annoys me about the creeping dark is that it's completely scripted and you can't actually choose to use it.

When purchasing games, I really do not care about length as long as the game itself is fun. There seem to be too many run-of-the-mill shooters out there that have more lengthy campaigns, but they are nothing short of being boring. Thankfully The Darkness 2 does something that most shooters do not. This game provides a great story, interesting gameplay mechanics, and it actually brings the player into the story to root for the anti-hero. Shooters are a dime a dozen nowadays, but do not miss out on this amazing gem. You will do yourself a great disservice. Believe me, it is worth the time and money.

The Darkness 2 is a very good sequel to a great game. It is done by a different studio so there are, as you might expect, some fairly major difference from the original. This is not necessarily a bad thing, as a clone with a new story does not always work out. The biggest difference is the art style, The Darkness 2 has a cell shaded motif that works for me, but I could understand some people not caring for. I played on PC and thought the controls worked well for a console port. As was the case with the original, the story and art was this games strong point, both felt real and were fun. The voice acting was generally good, but like many games got cheesy at a few points. I also thought the Vendettas part of the game is fun, though I have yet to actually try the multiplayer. The only major con for me was the length of the single player campaign, it is short. Other than that this is a great game.

PROS:
*Great story and art
*Good controls for a console port
*Vendettas is a cool feature to ad some extra content
*Generally good voice acting
*Game is not a clone of the original

CONS:
*The main story is short, very short
*The voice acting does get cheesy at some points

RATING: 8/10

The story, the gunplay, the tentacle darkness, the blood, the gore... all plays into Darkness II. The story is so good, it entails the character (it looks like anyway) from the last game, Jackie, dealing with the Darkness and pursuing some bad dudes through the whole game while trying to keep his mafia group together.

Jackie also deals with a lot of hallucinations... and you find out why in the game, but I think if you've played Darkness you probably know why. I wasn't able to play Darkness because it wasn't available for PC.

The controls seem to be more accustomed to being on a controller but it's totally doable on PC's Mouse and Keyboard which is how I played it. I prefer gunplay with a mouse anyway.

Anyway I'm just going to say that this is a game you don't want to miss out on, because 2K games definitely published a good game here.

I probably didn't make it much past issue #3 of The Darkness comics when it first came out. I didn't care for the potty humour and the violence and gore and I didn't care for womanizing Jackie. Darklings still fart and pee on corpses that the Darkness' demon arms have ripped apart in creative ways, but the major difference between comic Jackie Estacado and video game Jackie Estacado is that he's not a shallow womanizing jerk.

In fact, after learning about this scene in The Darkness, considered to be one of the most romantic video game scenes ever portrayed, I decided to check it out. Actually, I decided to check out Darkness II because I wanted to play on the PC, even though my first attempt made me sick and I had to plan carefully when I played in short burst thereafter. I youtubed the important parts of The Darkness, got a recap from Jonny in Darkness II, and then I was on my way.

I generally avoid overly violent games, but I have to admit to gleefully headshotting and meeting my Demon Arm Kill requirements and performing various other executions (and Assecutions -- don't ask.) Especially at the end when the music amped up and Jackie went on a little rampage.

But that wasn't the reason why I played this game. I played it because of Jenny. Because of Jackie and Jenny. Because of what Jenny means to Jackie and how they made that the most important part of this game in so many perfect ways. Jackie might be a bit obsessed with his lost love, but that's because Jenny is a just that special. I liked the way the game made that clear through flashbacks, Jackie's monologues and the quiet and fun moments you get to spend with her.

Don't worry. This isn't one gigantic date movie. Jackie still has to deal with the usual people-wanting-to-kill-him troubles.
