When I found out that Isabel was writing this type of book, I was so excited to see what she would do. Let me tell you, she did NOT disappoint! I haven't read a lot of dark books, but from the first chapter, I was hooked.
Donovan...oh my! He is so dark and twisted, yet sexy as hell at the same time :) We find out why he is the way he is and what causes that darkness within him. You do not want to get on his bad side, that's for sure. He meets Analeigh and we start to see something change in him. The two of them together were hot as f***.
There were times where I thought one thing and was totally blown away when it was something totally different. That's how you know you are reading a damn good book! The twists?! Isabel knocked it out of the park!!
This a must read that I highly recommend ;)
When I read the blurb I was intrigued, when I read the first chapter she released early, i was hooked, and when I finished the book I was in awe!!
This is definitely not your everyday romance novel if it is one at all. There is sex and maybe a small amount of emotion. It is dark, and it plays on everyone's secret desire for revenge on those that hurt us.
The way Isabel humanizes Donovan has you rooting for him through the entire story, regardless of what he has done. You can't help but want the best for him.
Even more awesome is the fact that this whole book is based out of my hometown! I would think Isabel has lived there she was so spot on with the locations, landmarks, and drive times!!
Love this book and I'm looking forward to it's sequel..
The twists and turns kept me hitting the next arrow as I devoured each written word and rooted Donovan on. His past haunts him, rides him to seek revenge on the ones who contributed to his broken soul. He accepts this part of himself, wholly. His ability to put his mask on and interact with people who try to manipulate him doesn't keep his dark mission in life at bay. If anything, it fuels his righteous fire.
The Jayden character, is amazing and the darkness both Jayden & Donovan harbor inside is seductive in it's own right. Can't wait to read their story. Now, I'm off to read more of Isabel Lucero's deliciously worded prose.
What I enjoyed-- loved that the author didn't try to romanticize the main character's attributes (darkness). Donovan James didn't sugarcoat who he was, he owned it.
Enjoyed that it wasn't all doom and gloom I felt even though the majority of scenes were not bright and happy. The twist in the story was fabulous and I didn't see it coming at all.
I would've liked to have been able to somehow connect to the characters more, on some level. I think this was because the characters were so dark, there wasn't anything I could relate to. It's not that they weren't well written, it's more the characters were somewhat emotionally detached and therefore, I was too. This book is definitely not an easy read and the moments that break up the ugly dark aren't what you'd say rainbows and glitter either.
I really liked the risk Lucero took on writing a story that wasn't romance but had that element woven into the story. It's tough to do and I thought she tackled it well.
This was my first Isabel Lucero book and I most definitely look forward to what she comes up with next.
You know how some authors are one-time hits for certain readers? I'm afraid Ms. Lucero is that for me. *insert sad face* Last year, I read her book, The Secrets That We Keep and loved it! I tried reading Living in Sin, I couldn't finish it. I managed to finish War, but it fell flat.
I'm afraid this is where Ms. Lucero and I part.
It's supposed to also be a romance, but I felt nada. I actually felt nothing while reading the book. As much as I tried and as much as I pushed, I couldn't read it.
Don't let my review sway you; you should give it a try, maybe it will work for you.
I voluntarily reviewed an ARC copy of this book. My rating is 2 stars for DNF.
