SOME RULES NEED TO BE BROKEN!

A colleague who's president of her own digital publishing company recommended I read "Darling, You Can't Do Both.' Having published several articles dealing with female leadership, I was interested in learning more on this topic. I wasn't disappointed. To the contrary. I worked with two different sets of dual CEOs earlier in my career and often marveled at how well they worked together. And, I've been involved in advertising at several junctures in four different industries. There is no question in my mind that barriers have been erected that adversely affect promising female managers and executives. It is one of the reasons I'm an enthusiastic advocate of Dr. Ora Hirsch Pescovitz's notion of "a mentor's quilt"---having several mentors, each for a different purpose. (Ora Pescovitz is a former senior VP at Eli Lilly Co. and now president of Oakland University in Rochester Hills, MI). I also know that women face resistance that is sometimes very difficult, if not impossible, to see. And, that sometimes men are unaware of their own biases. As I read this book, I reflected, from time to time, on how I tried to provide challenging assignments to women and giving them opportunities for greater visibility and recognition in both the organization and in their profession/industry. Integral to those efforts was helping to enhance their self-worth and showing them how to remove barriers to their success without micromanaging. Kudos to the authors for a valuable addition to the literature!

"Darling, you can't do both" is a wonderful follow-up to Nancy & Janet's best selling book about breaking into advertising. It's every bit as deserving of the accolades their first book received, and those of us who remember "Pick Me" fondly from our early days, will find it a welcome resource for navigating careers that have now moved into management.

Though structured around real lessons "Jancy" learned during their impressive advertising careers, the welcome addition of other women's stories makes the book a more universal resource for ambitious and passionate women in any industry, at any age, with (or without) a partner and/or children.

What I loved:

"Darling" manages to be brutally honest about the challenges women face in a male dominated industry, while still being hopeful about our ability to succeed, in spite of the odds.

Nancy & Janet bravely share some truly personal experiences in order to enlighten and inspire. From the anger-inducing "I'm underpaid" realization, to dealing with the backlash of taking a moral stand on a public forum, even struggling with feeling like a failure as a mom. They go there, and I love them for it.

You will find a story (or two or three) that feels so familiar to you, it's like you're reading your own experience back to yourself. Knowing that you're not alone and that there are other women who have been through it and have your back is both comforting and validating.

They've got answers: each chapter has clear, thoughtful guidance and actionable takeaways. I like a book that arms me with solutions. And I feel especially empowered by these ones.

You can be nice and successful. Nancy & Janet are industry luminaries. But they're also incredibly kind and grounded women. This comes across in their writing, and it's a refreshing and welcome reminder to anyone who has felt the need to "play the game" or lose themselves in the rat race.

With so few women at the top, it can be hard to track down a mentor when you need one. This wonderful book is the next best thing to having Nancy & Janet on speed dial. And I'll gladly take it.

Darling, I Could Barely Finish This Book

There's nothing in this book that you haven't read in any other female-written book about how to be successful in business if you identify as a woman. This one is different because it's written by two female authors that are in high paying positions/careers. Maybe it's more applicable if you're in the advertising field or if you've never read a book about females in leadership roles and/or the working world in general. I wouldn't recommend adding this to your list of books to read unless you've read all the other books there are out there surrounding this topic. And I really do mean all of them.
