When I first received them and tried them on I was just thrilled, my wife literally had to ask me to quit talking about them, they are that good. Oh yeah, they are pricey but you get what you pay for and I would not hesitate one second to replace my Darn Tough's if they were lost or worn out.
Full extra cushion of a very dense fabric from bottom to top but not abnoxiously thick like some wool socks. The nylon and spandex makes them conform to your foot without slipping or bunching up when walking in them without shoes on. They stay up over the calves with maximum comfort, I have fairly large calves and these socks do not restrict blood flow or feel tight at all, in fact you can hardly tell you have them on. The toe seams are very flat with no obnoxious fabric/thread knots that can cause blisters as I have had on some other high dollar name brand socks. Best part of all they DO NOT itch one iota! The very dense merino wool, nylon and spandex has to be felt and enjoyed in person to be appreciated. I have NO negatives or exceptions to mention.
I contacted Darn Tough with a few questions concerning size, colors, new models etc and they were first rate, answered my questions professionally and made me feel like a valued customer. They have earned my business for life, unless something better comes along which I clearly do not foresee.
Updated 12-18-13: Only thing I would like to add years later is a request that they PLEASE make an equally nice solid white crew sock, this is a hard to find item and I would load up on them.
These are very thick, and very comfortable. I own (though no longer wear) two pairs of SmartWool that I had been wearing alternately for a year so they may have worn thin just by wearing them so much but the difference is quite obvious. Given time I will see how the Darn Tough socks wear but as for right now I would say that they feel twice as thick as the SmartWool, and four times as thick as regular cotton Hanes socks. I wear the Darn Tough to work (wearing boots), around town (wearing "skater" shoes), and while lounging around the house. The top does like to slide down my calf a few inches over time but it is so slow that I don't notice and it is nothing that a little pull up through my pants leg doesn't fix. These are so comfortable that I don't ever care that they do slide down a bit here and there. When wearing them around the house they are knitted tightly enough on the sole that they do not pick up dirt too much, I have hardwood floors and several pets if that helps anyone.
That about sums up my Darn Tough experience to date, now I am about to purchase three more pairs to add to my two.
Thank you for reading my review, I hope it encourages you to get a pair (or five) for yourself or any loved ones that need good socks, and have a good day.
*Disclaimer, I feel that I have made these socks sound so good that you may think I work for Darn Tough, I assure you I do not. I am just a man on the hunt for great socks and want to help others pick out a great pair too.
EDIT for ADDITION on December 05, 2013.
It has been almost a year since I have purchased these socks and I want to say that they are still holding up today just as well as they were the first day I got them. My sock wearing schedule consists of me wearing the same pair for 5 days in a row then turning them inside out when I put them in the hamper to wash later. While 5 days may sound extreme to some people it is the only practical way I have found to wear these socks without having to do laundry every weekend. When I go to wash them with my clothes I have them turned inside out and use the full load option and warm water. Per the instructions I have not used the dryer to dry them ever. I put them aside when transferring my clothes to the dryer and just hang them over the pole in my closet that I use to hang my shirts and what not. A day later they are usually dry. I have found that the socks "form" themselves to your feet, I can always tell the left foot sock from the right one so I have them stored left on the left side and right on the right so I am not wearing out the sock prematurely.
All in all I am still completely satisfied with my pairs (5 total) of Darn Tough and imagine that I will have several years left in them to go.
