I got a women's large size and relied on the dryer to shrink them a bit to my size 9-91/2 and am glad I went bigger. If I had gotten medium I would have hung dry the socks to be sure they would fit right but wanted ease of care--so be aware when ordering and using sizing chart to plan for this.
Do yourself a favor and buy one pair of these. It's funny how "little things" can really improve the quality of your life. I put on some of my "usual" cheap "buy by the bag" socks the other day and my feet were miserable--too bulky, my feet sweated, they slipped, etc. and even though I have used those kinds of socks my whole life because they were a good value, I will never go back. Those wore out quickly anyway and Darn Toughs are good for life. They are also made in the U.S. (in Vermont) so we support our own economy with the purchase. I just wish I had tried them forty years ago or so. . .
These socks are very durable. But they are not as warm as socks with a higher wool content. These range between 46% and 65% wool. I have noticed that my feet were cold a couple of times and it is only late fall. You may want to factor this in your choice. If warmth is your highest consideration, I would look elsewhere. For cuteness and durability that can be worn with dress shoes, with the added benefit of being warm, these socks are hard to beat.
Before giving up on the brand, I decided to purchase a size large and see how those would work. After machine washing and drying them, they fit MARVELOUSLY. To date they fit perfectly, the heel never rides down to the arch, they are comfortable and the workmanship is truly beautiful. After purchasing a few more pairs from another site at a discount, I have laundered each pair several times with very minimal piling. After the first wash there was no additional shrinkage. I have no doubt that I will get many years of use out of these socks, and I highly recommend picking up a pair. They are beautiful and obviously made with great care.
My only word of advice would be in regards to sizing: If you are close to a size 9 or above, I would recommend the large size if the socks will ever take a run through your drier. If you are a size 8 or below, you are probably safe with a medium, unless you have large calfs. If you buy a pair and the sizing is a bit off, try buying another set that is one size up or down. They're worth it.
