Given the size of the Star Wars Expanded Universe, there are shockingly few villains with the sort of depth and character development we see amongst the heroes (only Darth Vader and Grand Admiral Thrawn come to mind). Given this, Drew Karpyshyn's Darth Bane series is a welcome treat. It not only explores the rise of an ancient Sith lord, it is also extremely well written and focuses on character development rather than simply action.

PATH OF DESTRUCTION

The first book, Path of Destruction is almost like the anti-Harry Potter. The story begins with Bane's dreary life on the mining world of Apatros. As he flees, he joins the Sith army and rises through the ranks. Like Harry Potter for magic, Bane is discovered to be particularly strong in the Force and trained at the Sith Academy on Korriban. Only, in this anti-Hogwarts, the apprentices engage in cutthroat competition and learn how to harness their hatred.

Unlike his peers, Bane forges his own path to the Dark Side, which makes him all the more interesting. Like Vader, Bane wasn't irredeemably evil, yet his transformation is both complete and chilling. After suffering so many setbacks and traumas, Bane adopts a Darwinian philosophy proclaiming that only the strongest Sith should wield power. Path of Destruction juxtaposes this with the reigning Brotherhood of Darkness, which stresses unity and equality against the Jedi.

Not only is this a great value as a three book bundle, but the saga of Darth Bane is so amazingly fun and enriching to the Star Wars lore it's hard to imagine having not read it. The first book is by far the best, and connects (and references frequently) the era and lore of KOTOR with that of the prequels, helping to explain for example why the Republic of Palpatine's era is so different form that millenia earlier, such as being demilitarized and overly reliant on the Jedi as pacifist peace-keepers for example, as well as the full explanation behind the evolution of the Sith into the "Rule of Two" that ultimately led to Palpatine and the destruction of the Republic and Jedi.

The second book is less good as the first, but still fun to read, and the third better than that. I definitely recommend the Kindle version, as it's so much faster/easier to read than traditional but that's just me.

Overall, a MUST for Star Wars fans

Karpyshyn does a great job of telling a story that we are so used to be told over video that its hard to notice that its a book. I should begin by saying that I am not an avid reader. But recently I needed to fly about 10+ hours, and I haven't been able to sleep on flights recently, so I decided to load up my Kindle app. I figured if its something I'm interested in maybe I would be able to read it and not be bored out of my mind.

There's a clear reason that the books are NY Times bestsellers. There is an ample amount of imagery and description for a set of characters and worlds, but also leaves enough room for your own mind to fill in the blanks and assume certain things based on the things you've seen from Star Wars in the past. In my opinion a perfect balance between letting you imagine the story, but also giving you enough information that you see the story unfold right before your eyes.

Now whats really great is that you get all 3 in one package, which means you don't need to hunt the rest down, and they all flow right after one another. If you're looking for a way to kill time till episode 8, or about to hop on a long flight, I say download all three, and even if you read a few pages a night, you will enjoy the experience of experiencing the world of Star Wars through a different channel.

If you are going to get one of these books, you're going to want the rest. Just go ahead and buy the bundle. Great story telling and fast paced reading. If you like Star Wars, you should like this trilogy.

The Darth Bane trilogy is a well written story and the character of Darth Bane is well developed. The story is set before the movies but remains linked to the overall story line. Of all of the Star Wars books that I have read, this is the most developed and a compelling read. Highly recommended for Star Wars fans to learn the history of the Sith Lords.

I have recently embarked on a quest to read all of the major stories of the Star Wars saga; and while I grew up playing the games and watching the movies, it was not until recently that I made the effort to pick up a few of the books. At the time of this review, I have read the Darth Bane Trilogy, played Knights of the Old Republic, read the story of Revan, and enjoyed the short stories of the Lost Tribe of the Sith.

However, no story has yet filled in more of the history of the origins of the universe than the Darth Bane trilogy. I had always seen and heard of Rakata items and lore, but it was not until this trilogy that I associated them with the beginning of the force users. Similarly, I'd helped destroy the infamous Starforge, but I had a hard time placing its significance in the grand scheme of the universe as a whole (rather than just isolated to that video game series).

The story of Darth Bane helps readers make the transition from the Sith as they're represented in the Old Republic to the Sith as they're seen in the movies. The trilogy is packed with Star Wars history and is a must read for any Star Wars fan. Aside from its historical significance, it's an enjoyable read.

The story follows no more than three protagonists at a time, balancing your attention span against the need to cover conflicting and intertwining stories; and the characters are relatable (as relatable as fictional beings can be), and the writing style is light, enjoyable, and fun.

All-in-all, I'd recommend this book to anyone who enjoys Sci-Fi, is thinking about beginning their Star Wars journey, or is simply looking for a quick and easy read.
