Update 05/27/17 Had this dash cam couple of weeks and some new Pro's and Con's
-Has 3 different options on camera quality. 720p 30fps, 720p 60fps, and 1080p 30fps. I mainly used the 1080p 30fps than 720p 60fps.(First left picture 720p and the second right picture the 1080p for comparison.) The 1080p I use is handy if you plug in the card to your PC to do zoom-in screenshots for any evidence or general reporting. You have options between the 3 amount of quality and manage your microSD card space.
-Example in the video of the review is recorded in 1080p by 30fps at day time with the water and time stamp.
-24/7 Parking surveillance option is handy to have if you leave your car out for awhile. The Parking mode only turns on when the dash cam detects a shift in gravity. Not a motion sensor. Records only within the 30 seconds once detects disturbance in gravity.
-Around 110° to 90° Fahrenheit on sunny day. Anker Roav C1 mount adhesive survived that temperature and didn't come off.Even when I put my windshield sunshade in front of it.
-Cable port is compatible with android plug for PC users. Easy to connect and option to be a webcam.
-Microphone is more sensitive. Doesn't sound as distant.
-Anker has 2 courtesy items to come with a 2-port USB IQ quick car charger so one can be plugged to your Roav and phone. Best item came with the the Roav was a orange scraper tool to pull off your old dash cam adhesive mounts.
-The record / power button on the side is very sensitive.
-Video files can only record up to 3 minutes. Phone user's will find lots of files to look through if you drive a long day. Luckily the Roav App there to filter each day. Easier to navigate through PC.
-Wifi connection option will take a lot of your time to fiddle around with the Roav manually to connect to your phone.
-24/7 Parking surveillance is also required to manually turn on through the menu settings. No button or switch to turn on the Parking Surveillance option.
-Included a night shot picture in 1080p 30fps. On video's at night setting causes the Roav to have a slightly more difficulty to catch light flares while on high speed. Vehicles with lights on there plate will create the flare to make the video ineligible to read.
-Roav does get hot if exposed on a sunny day (76 F°) while in-use and after finishing using.
-My windshield angle is 20 degrees which is the max angle I'm at in the photo's. Ranges of the Roav changeable angles are 20-60 degrees.
-Does require Micro SD Class 10.
Update 8/22/2017: After using the dash cam for about 2 and a half to 3 months now, this morning I noticed that the screen is detaching from the unit. I am very disappointed by this as this seems to be a common defect as noted by other reviewers. I loved this camera so much but it looks like I will be forced to send it in for a replacement, apparently it just can not handle the Texas heat without issues. On the plus side though the cam is still fully functional.
Update 9/4/2017: The screen is now separating from the 2nd Anker dash cam that I bought along with the first one. This dash cam is in my wife's vehicle and it is mostly garage kept except when she goes out for work errands and etc so when she sent me the picture below (pic with red truck in background) I was even more disappointed than when this happened to my dash cam. Now to start the return process again please fix this Anker everything else about this cam is great except this issue . Due to the issues with both cameras I have dropped my review from 4 stars down to 2 stars, if the replacement dash cams hold up I will revisit my review and rating.
Update 10/25/2017: Anker replaced both faulty dash cams and I haven't had any further problems with them. The first replacement process went smoothly they quickly shipped out a replacement cam and I sent the old one back. The second replacement process for my other dash cam did not go as smoothly Anker informed me that I would need to ship off the faulty dash cam first using their prepaid label before they would ship my replacement which wouldn't be a problem except we didn't have anything in our vehicle for proof if someone had run into us or etc while waiting on the replacement which temporarily defeated the purpose of having a dash cam to begin with. Additionally they also initially requested that I send back the charger and cable, mind you that the usb power cable is tucked behind my vehicle's trimming meaning that I would have to tear my vehicle apart to remove the cable. I still love Anker products but I feel that customer service and quality control on some of their products needs tweaking.
Update 6/2/2018: During a recent road trip my wife noticed that the screen on the replacement dash cam that Anker sent out to us a while back was bulging out just like the other cam that we had to send back a few months ago. I was assured by Anker before they sent out this dash cam that they had resolved the issue with the battery that causes the screen to pop and bulge out but apparently this does not seem to be the case. I wonder what happens once my warranty runs out and this same issue occurs. (posted updated pics)

I love the fact that the Roav is simple to use, I hard wired it to turn on with the ignition and off when parked. The unit is nicely built with a quality feel; uses metal along the sides, a great swivel Sony sensor camera, a clear field of view (140 degree), easy to upgrade software via the app, I like the 3M tape to lock down and stabilize the Roav (takes out vibrations and closer to the window), good microphone, and a sleek design to slip behind my rear view mirror.
CONS: I wish the touch sensor when selecting or changing settings was a bit more reactive, and a GPS to record the speed would be amazing. The app is nice but could use a little work, and the wifi is slow to download video, but I can remove the SD card and dump it on my computer easy enough. Oh and it would be great if I could get a filter to remove the glare from the window.
Final verdict: the Roav does everything well, quality built, and easy to setup. I highly recommend the Anker Roav to anyone who drives.
My 2 complaints for this unit are (both minor): 1. the USB cable is not long enough for bigger cars. I measured the cable it came with and it's approximately 10 feet and 5 inches (end to end). It wasn't long enough for my car and I had to use a 3 feet USB extension cable. I think Anker should include a minimum of 15 Feet USB cable.
2. The location of the on/off button is where you would normally hold the unit because of the shape of the camera. So what happens is each time I grab the camera, I would end up turning on the cam by accident.
Other than these 2 minor complaints which I can learn to live with... this dash cam unit is A+++ , highly recommended.
I'll see how this unit goes for a few months, if all goes well... I may order a second one to use as rear dash cam. :)
When buying a dashcam, one of the most important thing for me is reliability. If there was an accident in that one day where this did not automatically turn on and record, then I would've have had a dashcam for nothing.
Comes with a 10foot cable, so no need to buy another.
Picture quality is excellent. Put the SD card in a PC (wont run on the mac) and watch the videos from there.
anker customer service contacted me directly after this issue.
the support team was able to provide me a replacement sd card in order to get my camera up and working again.
i am unable to determine if my initial sd card used which was working for a couple weeks was indeed faulty or if the camera was at fault for rendering it unusable. i would like to give this product the benefit of the doubt until this card has time t prove itself
i like the camera
sadly it will no longer write to my 64gb sd card and the sd card is self will not allow me to delete files, format it, delete partitions or work in any capacity past playing some of the videos on it...
i dont know if the card is recoverable but its a real inconvenience at any rate
The good...LOVE the wifi feature with App, good construction, parking mode works, compact!
The bad...Blurry fuzzy image, over sharpe video, cannot read license plates, bearly read license when car is in front of you.
How it is that others look better? Why did this get such rave reviews? I am disappointed but I do like it.
I might install it at rear of car and get the Viofo A119s for the front.
1. Auto off and on with constant power. Most European Cars cigarette lighters are always powered so the unit never shuts off. It should have the ability to be woken on movement and start to record. ( The one I replaced had this feature. ) It should stop recording if the image is still or it senses movement. The fact it doesn't turn off means the whole parking sensor system does not work and therefore you are missing a feature.
2. Come with a short and long cord for those that are permanently installing it.
3. Its super picky about SD cards. All of mine are class 10 and are used in photography gear, HD cameras etc but it freaks out about formatting every time it gets reset.
Thankfully did not have to take SD cards out as no incidents occur, there was no need.
However when there was something that had to be looked after, I realized that camera skips recordings and the actual time when I needed camera to record was not there.
The worst happened later when it was realized that SD card does not stay in its slot, mechanism that holds the card is not holding it, clicks and nothing happens, card comes back out. That is it, I have a useless device now.
Since it's been more than 12-month - no support from the company rather than apologetic messages (understandable), but keep in mind to check your device regularly to prevent these issues and get it replaced/fixed within 12 month period
This is my review after 6 months of every day usage. Originally purchased in Nov 2017 and happy with the first 4 months without any issues and recording quality was good. Cable was long enough and the design is minimal so no distractions to the driver. Until the last 2 months, I am experiencing auto shut downs and start ups of the device. I would drive 5-10 minutes then I would hear the shutdown chime then boot up for no reason. I have tried using different cable and same issue happens so I believe there was a QA issue with my device. It concerns me if the device is even recording during the 60 second shut down notification. Since I purchased this in Nov 2017, the seller says there is a 12 month warranty so I will await for them to respond on the issue.
The UX isn't the greatest, as the buttons are touch sensitive and at the mounting angle on the window, it makes it very hard to know that you pressed the desired button. The UI is extremely basic and doesn't allow for up and down, instead you have to go across the whole row to get to the button below the first option. Also would have liked the round Multi-function button to allow for quick photo taking.
But the end of the day it's all about the video. At low light, it looks great and in the daylight even better. Accessing the videos is a bit rough on the camera itself, but once you select it, it plays perfectly with audio, however, scrubbing through is basically pointless so I opt it to save files in 1min intervals for easy searching.
The app is a bit of a rough experience which sucks because that would be the most efficient way to get a video of something you saw while driving. You must first turn on the wifi each time you want it as it auto turns off when nothing is connected. Once paired, it will auto start recording which is weird and I wish there was an option to disable as once in the app and connected, I then have to wait a few seconds to be able to turn off the recording. Once that is done, bringing up the files is pretty straightforward and smooth, but playing it back on the app is not a great experience. For one, landscape mode is glitched and cuts off a corner of the video. And scrubbing the vid to find a certain part is really bad as once you move the slider it will pause and wait for a buffer and sometimes lag out and freeze, and you have to restart the app. Downloading the video files take a hefty amount of time. 1min clips take almost 5min or so to download. but once it's downloaded the quality is great and looks awesome from the photos app.
I like how slim and sleek it is, it doesn't interfere with the aesthetics of the inside, and it's not overly visible from the outside. Overall I am happy I bought it, but there are times where I wonder if I should've gotten something better for a bit more money.
As for its claim of reliable use in any temperature. 100% true, it was scorching hot in Toronto this past couple of weeks, and it turns on and runs and captures good quality consistently. I've never had it turn off or not detect the SD card yet. And the images aren't blown out as a result of heat either. It's great for Canada's wide varied weather extremes (barring in mind, I haven't used it in extreme cold yet but I don't doubt its capabilities)
I found this camera very well constructed and stays well hidden on the windscreen thanks to the unique construction of the camera and it's style of mounting. The 1080p quality is stunning and it looks and feels like a much more expensive camera than what it actually is! The C1 version is very well equipped for the price you're paying and is easily the best dash cam I've seen! I recommend purchasing a 32GB Samsung memory card since the manufacturer recommends this brand as well due to its compatability with the camera. This camera is very easy to use and to setup and you will be glad you purchased it!
- Batch download
- Improve wifi speed (might be impossible without changing hardware). It takes as long to download a video as to actually record it. So if you want to record and download an half hour long ride, get ready to wait for it. Also, it is so slow that it is impossible to stream a video from the device, even at the lowest resolution (720p, 30fps), it keeps buffering all the time
- Power button to snap an emergency video. Using the small, almost invisible button just below the screen is almost impossible and quite dangerous while driving
- Sorting video in any kind of meaningful way, you know, like date sorting would be the minimum...
